Default Silicone ear plug front diff

Ordered a spare diff for my 418 and have a box of the gelatinous silicone ear plugs that I want to try in it.

Are these ear plugs similar to diff putty when cut up and built correctly? I understand the Tamiya Gear Diff Putty comes on a roll and requires the user to cut pieces off which makes me think its very similar to the ear plugs.

I was running 500K then 1M, now I want to try the plugs. Anyone have any experience/comparisons between plugs and thick oil for front diffs?
