I have one mayor problem with all those so called cheap kits. This is the lack of small or even not existing race team. How can you know that the car is going to work out of the box? The only reason why they work is that most of them kind of copy cats of Xray, Yokomo and Tamiya. Before somebody tells me the Tamiya team is small, I know this but the difference is that all of them running on the top.
Back to the pricing of the Xray kit the entire production is in the EU(Slowakia) and the income of the people is much higher as in china and therfore the price need to be higher.

From what it seems they have addressed some of this with the new car, so we shall see.

As for cheaper competitors, 2 come straight to mind. AE and VBC. Both have steppee up there game with better durabilty and comperable build quality to Xray. AE offers a few tuning options out of the box withbIMO the best sway bar system on the market. The AE kit comes in at around $150 less than the Xray as well

The VBC Dynamics comes with both carbon and aluminum chassis, DCJ's', multiple toe blocks, ti-nitride hinge pins and shock shafts, and every shock spring, bladder, piston, an
d swaybar VBC makes. All that for $50 less than a T4 14.

Edit. Forgot to throw ARC in there. Their Black Edition has extras in it and still under price of stock Xray.
Im curious what AE car you built. I built a tc6.2 for a guy and it was nothing compared to building a Xray car. I will say it is much better than the previous AE cars I have built.

An AE car is no where close to X-ray quality. I have a VBC D06. The CF cuts are nice, excellent machine work on the aluminum. However, the plastics are just a slight step behind X-ray. Again, very slight. Nonetheless a good value car.

The TC6's I race against are far more fragile than the Xrays.
I raced a TC4, then a Yokomo, then a Xray 007. The Xray was much more reliable.
My Father raced a TC5, of the 120+ cars we have between us, it was the biggest POS we have owned. Was a constant battle from day 1. He got sick of being beaten by my '007 he bought a T3 and was on the pace right away and never had to touch it.

There is no way AE products deserve to be compared to Xray. Not even close.

Why is Xray expensive?
Easy, small company, lage overheads with higher wages than companies that sublet part production.
Everything is done in house with the best quality machines.
Personal back up and support easily accessable from the guy that designed and races them.
The best instruction manual in the business. That costs to produce. Serpent don't even include one now to keep cost down.

After buying a few other brands of cars recently, I don't consider Xray expensive at all, they are good value and worth the extra money.

I think the geometry itself was not changed BUT the mounting points for ARBs were changed so they will be a little different. So much I could tell from his interview.

In the picture you can see some prototypes ...

There are no 'must have' parts except for the bumper brace, then perhaps springs, even then, the kit 2.5's are pretty good everywhere.

Man th faithfulls are fighting back. I would have an xray myself except for 2 things. The price tag is a bit high for a new kit. And... all that orange. To me its just plain ugly. If they were to make a black or grey edition, I would definately put it on the wish list.

Why? I thought it is overpriced, ugly, not a huge step in quality over AE and doesn't come with any of the must have hop ups.

You guys can calm down now. I don't know why you are bashing AE TCs so much. Since the TC6 there is no problem with the car. Only upgrades needed are bladders and springs. I am the only AE guy in a club of Xray drivers and the T4 is not faster than a TC6 chassis. Parts also just break if you hammer the car into the wall and in that case I can live with it.

I am not saying that the T4 isn't high end quality, but AE isn't sh*t at all!
