?'s tamiya TRF TA03R special chassis (limited edition)
i just purchased a tamiya TRF ta-03R (limited edition) item #58227 for what i thought was a good price. i dont know an awful lot about the chassis but i just know its fairly rare just from being in the RC scene for awhile.
most info pertains to the F or non TRF R so i just wasnt sure if they are all the same.
i want to build a drift car out of it maybe swap from R to F when i get bored.
now to my questions:
i need a ESC, reciever, and controller and servo.
it says it has a tuned motor. and i know stock ESC is fairly weak? id like to know what a good esc would be to buy for it. or id really like to get a brushless setup, but ive read alot on it and now all i am is confused.
also what are some good controller and receiver setups for drifting?
i dont know if there is any more hopups to do to this chassis, BB's or do they come standard in TRF?
would locking the rear diff be a bad idea if i where to go back to R config and try to corner well?
info seems to be fairly hard to find for the R chassis in the drift world so any info anyone has about chassis or drift related would be great.
thanks

was looking at the castle cm36 6900kv brushless motor and esc for the car? is that alright or is there better?. but also i was wondering if i did not go brushless yet what is a good esc to use that wont burn up with a hopped up brushed motor.

10.5 turn would be fun. whats better. a sensored or non sensored brushless motor?

That sure is a blast from the past - what did you pay if you don't mind me asking?
Got any photos?

You will have a hard time getting that car to drift well. The weight placement is way off from what you really want. You will be able to kick the back out, but maintaining long consistent drifts might be a problem. My advice would be go with a harder tire in the rear and something a little softer in the front. Any 10.5-13.5 sensored brushless motor and compatible esc should work just fine.

You're only a gearbox away from putting that motor in the front. Move the rear gearbox to the front (where the motor bolts into), and get a TA03F rear gearbox. Chassis plates will work (the lower chassis is the same between the 03R and 03F so you can even mount the battery in the rearwards 03F position.

Gotta search a bit harder to find the matching black plastic parts for the TRF cars. I stocked up before they got super rare. I've got enough spares to do long/short, front/rear motor, tub/plate chassis configurations. And change it around when I get bored.

Thanks for the responses. A lot of good info here. Yeah I kind of plan on playing with it in the driveway or local track with it in R config for traction. And be able to switch it to F for drift. And will probably let it sit a lot so I don't break it.. I paid $135 for it and it's coming with spare wheels and suspension. I would love to upload pics but my post count is to low. I will go post around and come back with pics!

So if I am correct the lower the turns on the brushless the higher the speed and lower the bottom end torque?
i was looking at a hobbywing ezrun 9t 35a brushless setup if that is any good?
also wondering if the diffs and and car come with BB's through out since its a TRF?

9t is a little overkill for drifting, I'd be inclined to use something with less power in a classic old chassis like that myself. 13.5t max probably. A 17.5t would still be plenty of fun in fact. Hell, VTA is quick with 25.5! Well, that's my opinion anyway.
And yes, that chassis was fully ball raced. The bearings might be a little worn after all these years if it's had much use (doesn't look like it though!)
It's a pretty old design though, don't expect "too" much from it. And be gentle! It's rare!!

yeah thanks, the only brushless ive delt with is a mamba monster in my emaxx so i wasnt sure what the turns and what i was getting.. after thinking about it i might just buy a dedicated drift chassis and leave this one in R config and make it a go have fun and drive(not bash)/shelf piece! ive just always wanted one since i was younger due to my dad having one so i had to buy it.
