Running cars on ice Question
Not really sure we're to post this but have a question looking to see if any one has done this and had any luck
I have access to a few ice rinks 200x85 And was hoping to find away to get electric cars Either GT cars or buggies running out there with out spinning wheels and sliding every where Testing gonna start next Hoping someone has tried this and had success Any input would be great Thanks in advance Jay |
The best we ever managed was using mini pins without inserts in the tyres, this was on frosty and icy track.
I also seem to recall someone mentioning Tamiya Rally 'Block' style tyres. You'll never get great grip on sheet ice. Skiddins |
make a video when you do!
On a serious note, I have heard of racing on ice with offroad vehicles using the super-hard rubber tires that required no inserts, like those that came stock on original RC10's, and using super short finishing nails through them to make them ice tires. |
Running loose would be fine our thoughts are just running ovals
With 200 feet straights And having enough traction to keep speed through 85 foot wide corners My 1st attempt is gonna be tacs through a set of slicks on my 811gte |
30 years ago we made tack tires and "cheaters" by using 2-56 bolts screwed in from the inside. They work but the cars are not really heavy enough to make them really bite like real bikes or cars with screws.

With such a long straight and sweeping turns, you should be fine - as long as you go really slow. IMO, it would probably be too slow and boring, especially with the intended layout you have. Tighten up the track and add hairpins and chicanes. Then at least it will be an interesting track for the slow speeds required.

many many many years ago we ran a couple 1/8 nitro on road races on ice rinks, we used screws from the inside of the wheel then used a small grinder and file to keep them sharp ... no tires. Traction was awesome, cars were like on rails ... but I dont think you could get away with that today. Cars would traction roll and it was realllly hard to find turn marshals lol

We did exhibition races at the hockey games during breaks and put small grabbers through the tires from the inside and backed them with shoe goo. We then put soft foam in and they were very hooked up. We ran figure eight and killed each other for the crowds.

I was thinking of foams with tacs
Or poss a set of hard compound slicks with thumb tacs through them My test car is gonna be Serpent. 811 gteB with rx8 gen 2 2050kv 4s Not sure if standard thumb tacs are gonna last 1st test run will be soon |
+1 to the previous suggestion.
I'd consider making a smaller track and focus more on getting the cars to drift around it. Speed is nothing without control  :tire: |
