Have you tried lower roll outs? I have been running 13.5 blinky with good success on letting the motor rev. Typically I have been between 70 and 72 roll out with 25-30 degrees of timing.
On Thursday, I tried 72 with 25' and 30' and there was a little more fade at the end of the run, with 70 roll out and 30', I seemed to have the best fast lap and least amount of drop off. Only about .18 seconds over a run. Fast lap was 9.104 and second to last lap was a 9.289.
I had run the motor with a more conventional D3.5 roll out at around 80-84 and the hot laps were ok, but the motor felt low on punch and it would drop off 0.3-0.5 tenths over a run.
I am yet to try the 17.5 motor so far, but if it behaves anything like the 13.5, I would think that a roll out of around 92-94 would be good? Have you had a chance to try something like this? Any thoughts?

I ran last week in our parking lot series. Track was 100 ft or so straight with lots of on-throttle. Mid 11 sec lap times. Running 17.5 @ 3.7 fdr with 20-23 timing on the can. Car felt good and motor ran cool (130F). Motor was good but it didn't feel I was getting the most out it. I was spending time on chassis set-up so I didn't really worry about the motor. Would like to make sure I'm getting the most out of it. Good product.

I like the motor with big timing and small gear. Seems odd at first but lap times won't lie.
It will be good to have a supply of motors again. Running what people cannot buy isn't fun for anyone...
To straighten up the pre worlds... Mark and I swapped motors many times. He ran a d3.5 in the mains. Me with R1 finished 3rd behind two d3.5. I had the fastest event lap in 17.5 but could reproduce it after that one round. I must of driven thru those red/white corners with my red/white body perfect that run...

That seems a little over geared to me for a 100ft straight. If I recall correctly Hanulec ran a 4.1-4.2 at full throttle for the world's warmup with I think 30 degrees of timing. The straight there is 200ft long. Mark Burt was also running this motor and he smoked the field using Mike's spare R1, I believe he was geared similarly.

3.7 sounds to high me. I would start around 4.2 with 40 deg of timing and adjust from there. Temp after 3 minutes and gear down 3 teeth temp again and then gear up 3 teeth. Always keep an eye on temps, anything under 180 is fine, but on smaller tracks with a fan, you should not be getting much higher than 165 at optimal ratios.
