If you want to try a Tamiya friction roll damper cheaply, ask a friend who races a F104V2. There's a plastic friction roll damper on the "W" parts tree that is not used on the F104V2 because it comes with oil-filled dampers. It might be a good way to try it out before spending the $$$ on the TRF friction roll damper.

It would not feel even close to the same. Unfair comparison. The aluminum damper is cheap anyways. $10 new.

And for those wanting to use the Tamiya aluminum tube damper, you'll want a longer ball end connector on just one end. The inner tube is slightly more exposed on the X-ray since the two mounting points are wider than on the Tamiya F1's. It shouldn't affect feel too much but there is more surface coverage on the tube with a longer ball end.

I'll post a pic tonight.

I used standard Xray Rod ends, but shortened by 3mm at both ends, so it has the same range of movement in each direction (without the plunger coming out too far) as the kit shock.

Good to know! I ended up using Tamiya ball studs with the Tamiya ball connectors. Didn't even bother to build the X-ray side shock.

I've got a Protoform Thirteen, not an absolutely perfect fit, but looks good enough;

I just so happen to have a Tamiya F104 Pro V2. I might sift through the box of unused parts.

That looks great actually. Do you know if the fourteen will fit too?

I'm afraid I don't. I just seem to recall someone mentioned that Juraj Hudy had said that the Thirteen fitted.

If it wasn't for the ESC on it's side with it's wiring touching the body I could actually get the body even lower

Here's my X1 with a PF Thirteen body on it. I'm ready to race it in Denver this weekend.

As No9 says: the Protoform thirteen & fourteen both fit just fine on the XRAY X1.
