When I ran an old Skool front end on my cars, that's exactly what I did.....grind a small flat on a plain 1/8" kingpin and use a grub screw thru the steering block to hold it in place ......because it makes spring changes and even just routine cleaning and upkeep so much easier. I too found the e-clips to be just too awkward and fussy to deal with.

The AE old school front end used 2 e clips to hold the steering block in place on the kingpin.

Nah, the old skool, two e-clip front end. I was thinking about the grub screw mod more for using springs of a different length (SM v AE) and having just enough pre-load on the spring rather than way too much and it would allow for a small amount of droop on the front. It's for GT12 not 1/12th but where better to find out info than from the SM guys

Only part I have ever broken on mine is a side link. Once.
I've ground up a couple spur gears however.
Things I would keep in my box if I were prone to breaking shit:
As for option stuff - I have all the Associated center/front springs as well as a complete set of RSD front/side/center springs but to be honest I have never felt the need to change the springs from what the car came with originally.
I run CRC spur gears because I like the 16 smaller balls over the 12 larger balls. I run TKO diff rings.

Things I would keep in my box if I were prone to breaking shit:
- Pair of upper arms
- Pair of lower arms
- Pair of side links
- Pair of steering turnbuckles (complete with ball cups)
- Pair of steering ball studs
- 4 or more axle/hub bearings (they go bad - tons of side loading on them - but this is true on any 12th scale)
- Stock turnbuckles with titanium (steering and camber)
- Stock inner (servo) ballcups with Associated
- Servo ballstuds with Associated 3mm
- Stock steering block ball studs with CRC 13615 aluminum pivot balls
- Stock axles with Associated

How'd you get the associated front axles to work?
Bent my front end today getting used to the new CRC carpet.
The Speedmerchant has splined axles, did you just drill the knuckle out?
