Last weekend was TCS and what a difference the older c-hubs made! Not a single broken one the entire weekend.
Overall I did horribly, but at least I wasn't a DNF in any of the quals/main. I will say those C compound tires SOAK up the traction compound like crazy. Usually I have to wipe my tires off before tech, but these tires were 100% dry just minutes after application (LGC).
Other than that, the only problem I had was due to a bonehead mistake after rebuilding the diff. The diff was leaking (forgot to use AE green slime) so I tore the rear end apart, rebuilt the diff, and buttoned everything backup. I put it down on the track and walked up the drivers stand. Gave it some throttle. The wheels spun (kinda) but the car went nowhere. Walked down picked the car up and flipped it over. Gave it gas and....WHAT THE HECK?? The fronts and rears are rotating in opposite directions. In my haste to get the car back together I flipped the diff left to right.
Now that TCS is over I plan on converting it to either VTA or USGT for asphalt season. Yesterday I switched over to the 51255 evo5 ring gears. MY GAWD why wasn't this the gear they included in the kit?! The drive train was instantly smoother and quieter.

Good info!
I've been researching the parts compatibility lists, and boy am I glad that I still have all of my 416 style arms, hubs and knuckles. They all should fit. And yes, the older c-hub is a much stronger looking design, and if you're not running the DCJ, will work without issues.

I'm looking for the 51255 and 51109 (or 51110) gears but can't seem to find them in stock anywhere.
My go-to place is usually TQ, but no joy there. Are there any other domestic suppliers of Tamiya parts? Tower and Speedtech were dead ends as well.

The box stock ratio (40/16) is 2.5.
With the 51255 gears (39/16) it's 2.4375
With the 51255 and 51109 gears (39/17) its 2.2941
For me, the drive train was much smoother after I installed the 51255 gears. After talking to other racers at my local track, based on what they're running I might not even need to install the 51109 gears to get to the same FDR they're using. Nonetheless, I'll keep the 51255 gears in.
As for the number of TB-04's that have been popping up in the for sale section, that was a little surprising to me as well.
I bought it since I wanted to run another class besides mini at TCS. I thought about getting a TA-05v2, but I liked that the TB-04 Pro II came the 418 suspension bits and the nice shocks. I'm still getting use to mine, but the only real complaints I have are:
- gearing / difficult to set mesh
- heavy

The 51255 gears bolted right on for me, but I can't remember if I have it shimmed per the manual or if I already did some adjusting. The 51109 needs to be slightly modified (I haven't done that part yet). See this post for more info:

I plan to use the TB04 as my track car because of the sealed drivetrain.

Hey guys quick question, what's the difference between the TB-04 alum. shock stay mount and the TB-03 one.

I read that in an article. It said that mount will reduce the number of spacers on the shock mounts. I plan to acquire those when my budget allows it. It is similar if not the same as the TB EVO 6s shock stay mount.
