Default 1/12 scale endbell timing, positive or retarded

As it pertains to 1/12th scale , 17.5 blinky, small carpet road course.

I have heard of some people using negative[retarded] timing on the end bell and unusually large pinion gears.

Has this become a common practice?

Not every motor is set to 0deg timing on zero mark
More often than not, zero=30

Every brand is different
But I've never had much success with so little timing
