As far a the cheapest I'm not sure...I know that tower hobbies is selling their Vortex motors for around $90 and speed controls for $210. A friend of mine has been doing R&D testing (touring Cars & Emaxx's) on brushless motors for a company here in AZ that imports them from Germany. I think the motor are from Hacker and the speed controls are from Schulze. I think he said that they will sell their motors for around $100-$130 and the speed controls for $170-$200. I think that the complete systems (Novak,Orion, etc) will all cost around the same price. As for the Vortex 8,10,and 12 question...That is the turn of the motor. I can't wait ro try Orion's system so I can compare it to the Hacker/Schultze system.
