Commutator cutting fluid

Okay, we all know the bit has to be lubricated so what is your preference for comm cutting fluid?

I have used Team Cobra and Fantom comm cutting fluids. I like the Fantom stuff a little bit better as it doesn't collect as must shavings around my bit area as the cobra stuff does.

big jim told me to use nothing but the sharpie you put on the comm. allthough i have never used dedicated cutting fluids i think it is good enough without.

I agree, the ink from a Sharpie seems to work just fine, as well as provide a visual cue for telling when you've got a good cut. It's all I'ev ever used, & I'm quite happy with it...:)

Accually, I've been using black lately.. I used blue a lot in the past, but I cannot find my blue sharpie anywhere.

I have black sharpies up the wazzoo.. I think i have 4 black sharpies in my toolbox, two in the desk in my room, and one in this desk. Not a blue sharpie to be seen.

ive always heard to always use fluid. You will get a great cut either way, but the comm fluid will keep your blade sharper for longer. This info is coming from a flier with very large font that came with my lathe. I use the cobra stuff AND a sharpie.

how about teflon lube?

Boomer 08-17-2002 11:42 PM

I've tried oils, like real cutting oils, but they always seemed to make a mess.

I personally like a RED sharpie. . .well, I actually can't find my black sharpie and all I have is my red one, so that is what I have been using. . .:p

Black, Red, and Blue Sharpies are okay BUT you really can't beat a Green Sharpie
