hello, i got my new pack (SMCib3800), as per instructed i made my initial charging at 5.0Amp ; 03mv/pack delta peak ; using a cell master, how come it only charged 2500mah?? Is this normal? Note: i did discharge the tray using novak smart tray. My second charge was a week after, Setting: 5.0A;05mv/pack; much more cel master, charge was 3600mah. iI was hoping it will charge more than 3800mah. Why oh why?? Hope you guys can help. tnx

Maybe your battery is false peaking, you charging with a fan?
I've never experience that kind of problem with new batteries.

To get .03 like Danny suggest would be 30mV on the MM Cell Master. The cell master used Millivolts. I would start with 20 on the Cell master and check the temp. Then adjust till it peaks at 130 degrees F.

Danny, I know you have answered this before, but could you tell me what exactly to do for my 3800's 6 cell I use for mod touring (brushless) and my stock 4 cell 12th.
I have your batteries and it said to charge at 6 amps with a 35 mv cut off.
Is this correct still? I would like to keep my packs going for at least a year of on road ( winter) and off road (summer).
My process is to:
A couple days after racing I charge them 500 sec. each for storage. (Race every other week mostly)
The night before I race I discharge them on my Tekin 350 at 30 amps and then tray them on a trinity discharge tray until lights go out. I them charge them as I need to race day.

Charge at 6 amps with 20mv - 30mv peak detect for the entire pack. The goal is to get the pack to peak in the 130-140 degree farenheit range measured with a temp gun.
After your run discharge them down to .90 per cell at 30/35 amps on your Tekin discharger. Leave alone until the next time you plan on using them. Prior to charging them place them on your discharge tray for a few minutes then start charging them.
Your routine that you have been doing is o.k. but you most likely lost a bit of runtime by storing them after they were trayed.

I discharge my 3800 @ 30 amp then I tray them until the lights go out and store them till the next race days, My 3800 will go over 4000 MAH which is amazing and I charge them on 6.5 with delta peak @ 28mv cut off temp around 130 -135 deg. It give my packs one heck of a punch.
I'm using maxamps IB 3800 they are awesome not to mention I don't have to pay an arm and a leg.

Hi all,
I see Danny posted some standard practices for charging and storing. I have a couple questions for him.
Why do you reccomend charging at 6A vs 5A
The Peak detect is understandable.
Whats interesting to me is the methods used to prepare packs for the storage. You suggest to discharge the pack at 30A or 35A to 5.4V per pack. Would this create extra unneccessary heat and shorten the lifespan of the pack? Why not just discharge at 10A or 20A? What is the intent of discharging at such a high rate?
You mention to TRAY them prior to the next charge. Are you saying Equalize them prior to the next charge cycle?
What specifcally are you commenting on that reduced runtime?

IB cells do not respond well to dead shorting or bringing down the voltage under .90 per cell . the result of dead shorting or a deep dis charge is loss of run time.
all of our cells are trained to dis charge quickly thus the need/reason to dis charge them at 30 or 35 amps at all times. they will perform best and give all they have if you keep the dis charge rate as close as you can to race conditions. the cells from smc have been matched at 35 amps to weed out the weak cells and to teach them to perform at there best by matching them to closer race conditions. danny feels the 35 amps is closer to real on track conditions than 30 amps.
the tray alot of racers have been using is the integy zero thirty. you place the pack in the tray until the lights go out. remove the pack as soon as the lights go out, this is to avoid a deep dis charge (under .90 a cell) and reducing run time.
place the pack in your battery box until the next time you race. when your ready to charge the pack on race day, place the pack into the zero thirty tray until the lights go out and charge.

When I said Equalize, I use a rayspeed equlaizer which I believe discharges individual cells down to 0.9V at a 5A rate.
