Let's Talk Modified

Really !!!! If you mesh it wrong , sure ! I have my fastest accelerating and top speed tc4 RTR running a 550 novak 4.5t motor at 4S !!!! It makes my 3.5t look like a 17.5t...... I have to reduce my throttle to run it on a 8scale track : it's too fast , but the drivetrain takes the abuse flawlessly.... I've never blown the rear ball diff in three years of use..... Try that with a belt drive...ha !!!!!

Josh, I've been using a SP V3 in mod and I really like it. They're very reasonably priced compared to other mod capable speedos. I bought mine from SP USA direct for $99. Get the hobbywing digital programmer to go with it and its a pretty sweet setup. Come by my pits Sunday and I'll show you mine.

Ive never had a problem with any of my tekins that wasnt self inflicted lol. i delaminated a board on one from improper solder care when i was noob, but ive run down to 6.5 on my regular rs without issue and my 4.5 works JUST fine on my rspro. its all in having a beastly fan blowing at the posts and making sure you caps are healthy.
might try to stick a delta 40x28mm blade server fan on the esc/motor if there is enough room but 40x10/15mm is a little more sensible lol. even 30x15/25mm fans but harder to come by with decent specs.
im probably going to try another esc later this year but so far I havent noticed any speed deficiency with the tekin. some people say it works like a light switch, depends how you set the boost profile and how heavy your finger is lol. the new throttle curve feature and my radio point arc feature are quite useful at taming modified horsepower in the infield.

Throttle finger + flowing track layout are very important in mod.... The possibility of not finishing a race is very real too..

I've run the RS-Pro in 1/12th with a 4.0 and 4.5 with no temp issues at all, the real problem with the RS esc's are they lack throttle modulation to consistently hit each corner at the same rate. I ran Tekin for about a season and a half tried everything possible and it just looked sloopy on the track, this January I did not renew my commitment with them and started looking at other ESC, tried a few others... Almost instantly my lap times drop a little and my consistency imporved a lot....
JUST MY $0.02 worth, I truly love the Tekin for anything but Mod.

What are people doing on the handset (I run ko esprit 3) with the expos to smooth out the throttle curve compared to Stock racing
First time running modified at the brca nationals so any help is appreciated in getting it as smooth as possible

My setup I ran last night for your reference:
V20 software with Stock 1 firmware
Running Mode: Forward No Reverse
LiPO Cutoff: No Protection
Overheat Protection: Disabled
ABS Brake Percentage: 60%
Drag Brake: 20%
Initial Brake: Equals Drag Brake
Neutral Range: 8%
DRRS 3.0: Level 1
Boost: 40%
Boost Max: 140K
Slope Rate: 6*/0.1s
Hybrid Start RPM: 9000
Delay 0.1s
FDR was 7.8 Reedy 5.5 with middle timing
Hope this helps!

I know there are some people out there who feel it is a crutch and don't want to use it, so I too would be curious to hear whether some of the "big-names" in mod run throttle expo or not.

Expo is the devil...lol... I want all response immediate, linear and as precise as possible. Especially in 1/12 mod, my driving is all based around the throttle response. I hate driving in the back of the trigger from so many old skool years of having to roll around and save battery. Now that we have all this battery, I just can't make myself slam the trigger back so I have to run crazy bottom end HP to keep up and be able to drive like I like... That's why, when I can make a speedo/motor drive and feel right, I can really run strong in 1/12 still but if I can't find the right settings I really struggle.
TC, it's all about controlling wheel spin and even there I don't like expo. I tend to just use the motor set-up to try and make a linear and if need be, softer power band.

I have to agree with what Rick or Josh said a few pages back on the motor. I just start running Mod 12th with a Checkpoint 3.5. Before putting it in the car i took the motor apart and measured the ID of the stator to find out it's 15.5mm which provides a larger air gap than stock motors.
Many may say this is way to much motor for someone just starting out in Mod, but after driving the car a few times I found it to be quite easy to drive on the bottom end of the throttle. This motor in combination with the Reventon Pro ESC i'm using makes the car very drivable. Once i figure out how to stop over shooting corners and some setup, Mod 12th may become my favorite class, assuming we can get enough people to run it on regular bases.

Hey Josh I'm planning on running mod TC this summer on the Toledo track. I was told that I need a 4.0 to keep up ... What do you think ?
Thanks.
Thanks.
