need recommendation for a 17.5 motor. No D3.5 please.

I run blinky 17.5 in a small to mid size carpet track. Now that the D3.5 is no longer roar approved. Is there any other motor that comes close to the D3.5 that is roar approved?

I am currently running the turnigy trackstar which runs fine, but it's not roar approved. I just want to keep at least one legal 17.5 motor. so any recommendation is welcome.

Thanks in advance. :)

The new reedy motor is similar to the trackstar

Team powers plutonium motors are really good. I run a 17.5 with a high torque rotor and it is almost as fast as the d3.5.

Revtech 17.5

My top pick of currently roar approved motors:

- Revtech 17.5 with HT rotor (Great Motor and tons of power)
- Trinity D3 with HT rotor (Ran same lap times with this motor as I did with my D3.5)
- Reedy Sonic (Strong motor just needs to be geared correctly)

Hope this helps and good luck.

I just picked up the Fantom Racing Apex 17.5 Spec motor and I am very impressed and the power is noticable. This motor replaced the RevTech 17.5 which is a very good dependable motor. I would recommend the Fantom products. Not affiliated with Fantom just impressed with the Killer Voltz LIPO and the motor is awesome. Plus they have a motor rebuild program for EPIC based motors.

I also originally started with the Trackstar 17.5 red can motor and it was decent but if you go with the Fantom you will see a pretty big difference.

speed passion MMM with correct timing board and rotor :)
Reedy sonic +40 on the can and correct gearing
Revtech/Fantom w/which rotor best suits track(top end or torque)

I've tried quite a few of the 17.5 motors available - Thunder Power Z3R with the green rotor gets my vote. The RevTech motor with the HT rotor is really fast, but I've seen one too many "let the magic smoke out".

I see a few guys in this thread saying reedy sonic if they are geared correctly. What is the trick to gearing one?

I've seen just as many Thunder Power Z3R 17.5's go up in smoke as I have Revtech's. Atleast the Revtech with the High Torque rotor was the fastest motor on the track when it went up.

Revtech 17.5 with the High Torque Rotor
Reedy Sonic 17.5

If you don't want to worry about about speed those two or bust.

finding the sweet spot between temp and speed(corner speed). You may have to run a little shorter of a gear with less top end, but have more speed out of corners at +40 on the can. It will take some testing.

Novaks are fast :)

What would be the correct gearing for Revtech 17.5 with or without HT rotor in a TC?
