You'll only burn up an ESC with a motor if that ESC isn't rated for mod motors. What ESC do you have? Also, gearing is very track and layout specific as is timing. With a little info about the track I can point you to a good starting point for you to work from.

Also, don't forget a good or alot of schotky (sp?) diodes. You'll definately need them with a hot mod. That's one way I fried one of my ESC's. I forgot to toss one on the motor. You'll need it for heavy braking like when you use a spool or diff.
Gearing? Hmm, I haven't used an 8 turn in years. But since Roar is back to open mod... I'm gonna start using them again. I forgot what I geared mine too. But like Jon said... alot depends on the track size, layout, car, motor timing, etc...

i charge all my matched packs at 5amps...
i found that my 8x1 orion motor liked it better when the timing was reduced, rather than the 18 deg that came with the motor... 8.5 to 8.7 final drive seems right.

Yeah, 5 amps is about right. But they should be charged at that from the start. I've used lower timing on the V2 motors on smaller layouts to get more grunt out of them on the bottom end. On a big layout like that, you can go with a little higher timing to get some good top end.

i agree, i once experimented with different charging rates, like 6amps for stock, 4amps for mod, the packs deteriorated quite quickly... i feel thats packs should be charged the same everytime, whether it be 4, 5 or 6 amps or even stepcharging, as long as you do it over and over again...
... our track is relatively small, around 9.2 to 9.4 final drive on the 8x1 orion.
