Removing foam tyres
 

Hey guys, is it possible to remove a foam tyre from a pan car wheel with out any damage to the tyre?

I'm assuming u can't buy the tyres individually nowadays?

Acetone takes the foam right off. Just let it soak for a day or so in a sealed jar (mason jar is good) , and the foam will slip off.


The problem is what are trying to save? the foam or the rim? I have had good success removing and mounting new foam (donuts), or corrally, Jaco, and RC4LESS rims. Their rims are some sort of plastic that the acetone doesnt melt.

CRC 1/12 scale wheels melt into goo (but the foam is okay) from the acetone. I believe their wheels are vinyl/latex plastic.

You can still by foam donuts from RC4Less, and Windtunnel racing. Sometimes good buys on ebay too.

See I've modified some vintage Bolink rims to a different offset for a touring car project.

So I'll check out that link and get some new ones, or try acetone to remove some new foams of some new wheel.... Thanks again I've been stuck on what to do for a while now lol

I trued all the foam off close to the rim and just sanded the rest off, while on the truer. No waiting

Boil them in water. Acetone or MEK will soak into plastic and soften them up, to where they will melt. Boiling them will take off CA cement easily, like peeling a banana. You have to wear gloves.

Last time I boiled a foam tire the foam shrunk. Boiling or using some sort of chemical to remove the foam is going to deform the foam some. You may be able to true down past the deformity and make it work but usually your better off just buying new donuts.

Lacquer thinner works well too. Let soak in jar. Won't be able to save the foam though. Stretches out!

what is the part are you trying to save ? the wheel or tire? actually I do find that I can buy both separately .

I am running yokomo which is a non standard rear offset. so I have to get yokomo wheels. I will buy donuts and assemble myself.

Sorry, im trying to find some tyres for a custom offset 2-2/8 Tall 1-7/8 wide wheels.

So I'm just trying to find the cheapest way of doing it, if I can find some donuts that would be great

This is the project im doing, its going to be buit for speed runs.

Stock touring car whees just looked silly so I cut modded these wheels to suit.

all i need is the tyre but im struggling to find the right ones

Well from the sound of his first post he wanted to safely remove foam without damaging it so that it can be reused...if it shrinks that would cause a problem with reusing it.

I'm trying to find some donuts for 2-2/8 Tall 1-7/8 wide wheels.

I'm not having much luck, is that a standard wheel size?
Do all pan cars have the same wheel dimensions?

I'm a total noob when it comes to fractions, pan cars and foam tyres
I'm allso a newby to this forum.
Here is a sneak peak of my collection, it's changed a little now. I've sold 5 in the pic, but they have been replaced with another 3 lol
I sold the Rustler 69 charger, HPI MT2 gold F150, yellow and white truggy, yellow mini and front blue buggy.
Replaced them with a SCX10 honcho 2, losi 8ight-e and a traxxas 1/16 Ken Block
