If you look at the end of the -R springs (the white ones), they have a yellow mark on them. They're from the limited edition white spring set...they're just white "yellow" springs.

the TA05 or the TA05R DOES NOT come with super stiff springs. they are either the all silver kit springs (original TA05 kit) or the white colored with yellow dab springs.
the "kit" silver springs fall inbetween yellow and blue on the tamiya scale. the yellow springs (painted all white with the dab of yellow) are PERFECT for asphalt racing. these are the springs that are always included with tamiya kits. the reason they released all "white" springs with dabs of color on the bottom is to hide a driver's set up from other drivers.
as for the kit shock oil. they are tamiya 400 wt oil. they are very similar to 40wt oil. some have said they are equivalent to associated 30wt. but its tamiya's version of 40wt oil.

how the heck are you supposed to tighten the nut that holds the ball diff together? i can't get a needle nose down in there, and i can't get the included X wrench in there either.
also, in step 2, the diagram depicts a part A10 that goes in between the spring and the nut, but i can't find it anywhere. do i forget this part or have i probably overlooked it somewhere obscure?
thanks again

The diffs were worrying to assemble for me as well, just because it seemed like the main bolt barely got to screw into the nut on the other side. If I tightened it more than like one thread into the bolt, the diff was too tight and didnt spin smoothly...and if it backed out another half turn, it was completely out of the nut.
I havent actually run my car yet, so Im curious if Im going to have issues with the diffs.

You need to crush the spring with pliers before assembly otherwise it will be almost impossible to assemble, I do mention this in my blog build tips referenced above.

Crush them like close them completely, or just squeeze them so they are a bit narrower?
My diffs work and are assembled, but like I said, it was hard!
I must have missed that part, I did read some of your blog...Im pretty sure the manual didnt say anything about compressing the springs...seems like something they should mention!

With all the Tamiya kits I've owned, I have never had to pre-compress a spring to get a diff to work properly. I haved owned several other touring cars from other manufactures and have never had to pre-compress the springs to the those diff either. This discussion about pre-compressing has not convinced me to do so and feel you'll may be misinforming new enthusiasts on proper setup. I think all Tamiya diffs should assembled according to the specific instructions provided!!! Tamiya diffs like other manufacturers diffs need to assembled run then readjusted after the initial run in and then regularly checked as part of your normal inspection and maintance done on the vehicle.
