I am sorry if this has been asked 100 times but I am doing a search and coming up empty with info about this particular station

I am interested in buying a new Radio Shack Digital Soldering Station part number 64-1285. I was wondering if anyone can give me a heads up on this unit?

yes this has been asked about a million times lenny, when will you learn to use the search feature... lol, j/k hows it going? i think i have seen that station at my local radio shack, but other than that i have no other info on it, sorry. if you want to go with a guaranteed solid unit i would go for a hakko or ungar station. i have used the hakko 936 station for a while with out any problems.

LOL... doing well.................yeah I checked out your 936....seems the way to go I guess. Can you do battery packs with it?

you can but i wouldnt recommend the stock tip that comes with it for that type of stuff. you could get a big flat blade tip for that type of stuff(i can probaly email part #s if you want). i have a good cheap craftsman 45watt iron with a huge tip that i use just for doing battery packs. it was only like 10.00 and works flawlessly.

I don't know much about radioshack digital iron but I was never happy with the other models. Usually the tip was a big factor.

This place has been good to me. I have used weller and Ungar 40-50watt irons with no station. Eventually the heating elements or tips would wear out and force me to buy a new one. Hobbyshops were not good at keeping parts in stock until I found this place.

I use the We-WJPC300 station $32.95
You can plug in any iron and regulate the output. When I don't need to solder I turn it down to 1. Takes about 30-45 sec when you have to turn it up. It also has a lite for on/off switch.

As far as irons go get the 7400 handle, 4034s(45w) heater with PL133 tip $41.97. It is 45 watts and uses a good tip. If you want to try another tip get the PL153. The PL133 tip is my first choice.

What makes this nice is if you burn out the heating element you can buy it for $25 and a tip for $6.

With the station you should last a long time if you turn down the heat. If you are not using it just turn it off. I used to hate unplugging/plugging it all the time.

Hope this helps and it keeps you under $100.

I do have the Portasol Beutane kit. It is ok as a field solderer but is pretty awesome for doing shrink tubing. If you use it for field soldering you will have to be out of the wind or in a box.

i searched everywhere for a new soldering station, i was really wanting a Hakko and found a sweet deal.
circuitspecialist.com, they have a re-badged Hakko 936ESD, it's the same iron just with the circuitspecialist faceplate on it. 300- 900 degrees F, full heat up from off in 90seconds, calibratable, ceramic heat element, pen iron with metal screw-in terminal......$34 all the parrts are availble and cheap if you break something, while you're there get that cool metal tip cleaner and some 1lb spools of solder

i have one and they work awsome atleast for me. all i used it for was to solder deans to batteries and to the esc and stock motor.
but it always works and i did not have to spend much money on it thanks to a gift certificate to radio shack
