Do these Spec-R's use regular spur gear or special ones like Xray?
Thx.

Regular spurs, the Kimbrough fit really nicely with flanged bearings.

After looking thru this thread I get the impression that R1 + upgrade cost = Xray.
I was considering spec r r1 for my son's next car but I might just save little more and get a T4.

the car is fine as it comes in std form, the things i recommend to change from start is:

1. Ballcups to eg tamiya - $9
2. Spurgear to a wider one, kimbrough, or just buy the option bushings - $3.5

the car doesnt need options to be fast, but as with all other cars there are always options that can be bought to change the car after how you want it to be (springs, topdecks etc..)

same thing if you buy a xray t4, a friend in my club bought one to replace his t3`12. wasnt happy with the t4 until he had changed: ecs axles in front, alu steering w/o stops, flex topdeck, springs.

costwise it takes alot of options to get the r1 to what a std t4 costs

S1 plus any upgrades you really need = $200.

Can't get a XRay for that.

What about the shafts that keep on breaking? The upgrade ones are $39.

Yeah, that was me. I broke two.

One good spring steel set for the fronts was $39 plus a front gear diff. $200 or thereabouts.

Rest is stock S1. Stock ball cups. Stock steering rack (in my VTA car, USGT car has aluminum). I do have some $3 Associated springs on it.

Was TQ in VTA last week in Indy. Never done that before. Asked all of the other racers if they were going to run out and buy a Spec-R now...

I have the R1 and love it so far. Its a fast car and DIFFERENT than everyone else's xray. I bought the tamiya ballcups and flanged bearings for the layshaft but don't see the need for the other options, just my 2 cents.

Out of the box the car needs very little at all, front drive cups is it. As for people breaking cvd's i am yet to see anything fail on this car, I run in 10.5T and the only parts i have broken are the bottoms of the rear shocks which i did not notice were rubbing on the inside of the foam tires we run.

I bought the S1 $120 and the only upgrade i have made is to steel outdrives for the spool after the plastic ones wore out from use.

I know alot of people replace the ball ends and ball cups, but i really do not think it is necessary, I have put 2 shims under one side of the bell crank, and my steering as maybe 1mm of movement in it, left to right.

The only other upgrade i am considering currently is to add the sway-bars. But even that is not all that essential, the car is great out of the box and on the default setup, if you run on tight tiny US indoor tracks you might need a front gear diff to get extra turn in.

I have the S1 and yes Ive replaced the ball cups into tamiya, replaced the topdeck to a carbon fiber coz I broke my stock topdeck. Ive shimmed some parts to eliminate the slop and thats it. I also want a T4, its avery nice car. But sadly now I can only afford the S1. And its doing a very good job for me so far ...
