I'm looking to get into touring car racing, in the 17.5T spec class. My question is, there are so many manufactures that make a 17.5T roar spec motor, are they all suppose to be the same in performance?

I've looked at a couple different 17.5T roar spec motors....
Revtech, 3000kv
Team Epic D3, 2300kv
Reedy Sonic, 2268 KV
Viper R/C "VST", 1900 kV

How can motors with different KV ratings all be considered equal?

They are supposed to be, but they still vary from brand to brand and from motor to motor in the same line.

KV is useless in our applications, so do not go by that, but yes there are motors that are faster than other motors due to differences in specs, rotors, and timing.

I don't own a 17.5 motor but this summer it seems that all the faster guys locally were running either a Trinity Duo 3.5 or the Revtech 17.5 motors. If I were to go 17.5 I would get one of those and not look back.

The D3.5 and Sonic motors seem to be the new hotness for blinky 17.5. However, my revtech with HT rotor is hanging in there strong. The D3 is still a good motor, but I'd contend that the previously mention three are faster. No comments on the Viper.

Out here the Team Powers Spec motors have been the fastest. They won the 17.5 and 13.5 classes at the Reedy this year.

The D3.5 was designed with blinky TC in mind. I would get the RevTech Magzilla, D3.5--my first choices---yes they are biased. Then the Reedy, Thunder Power<--last choice as I have seen then smoke quicker than the above, still a good motor though. I know some people use Schurr Speed and Plutonic motors---i think thats right and have good luck with them too but I have yet to try them. I also know a fair amount of people like the 17.5 MMM Speed Passion motor.

With any motor just try to keep the temps down and you will be good. try to keep it around 140-160 degree F range. If you keep it there or lower all of the above will be fine. The motors I have seen go were all above those ranges typically by a fair amount.

Having just come back from the BRCA Clubman's meeting at Cotswold, I would have to say that there IS a difference between the motors.

Fastest cars I saw on the day were running Reedy Sonic, GM, Vampire and Revtech motors. My HPI Flux Pro-powered car didn't have the same edge, perhaps 0.5s a lap off - bear in mind this is a very big track, 60m straight, and three long flat-out stretches in total. On a smaller track, I doubt there is very much in it.

anyone have opinions on speed passion 17.5's .. more precisely the ultra sportman v.3 or v.2 ?

I have no information on the ultra sportsman series but can say that the 17.5 1 cell is awesome in my 12th scale car and the 17.5 MMM is almost unbelievable in my 22 buggy. I will be trying the 17.5 1 cell in the buggy after the IIC since the 13.5 1 cell (I have more than one so it was ok to try) accelerates faster than any motor I've seen and can still hang on the top end.

I am running a viper 17.5 in my offroad buggy and going to try it in a TC and a pan car when i return from deployment if I can find the rest of the pan car stuff i need.
