Start small and work your way up. There are many variables to consider when gearing. How you are running it being the biggest factor. On a track, wide open in the street, how long you're run times are, if you're advancing the timing or not, etc.
If you're afraid of burning up the motor from over or under gearing, by a cheap temp gauge. You can find them at Harbor Freight, some hobby shops, or anywhere online. An ideal temp after running for me is in the 130-140 range. You can run them safely up to 180, anything higher and you're asking for problems.
If you just need a quick and dirty number, try a 20 tooth. If it's too hot to keep your finger on for more than a couple seconds, then you need to change.
Drift cars are a different animal though. Something I have no experience with. The above is just a basic RC tip.
