It will let the battery have a cooling down/Stabilizing periode I think.....
Anyway, it works awesome!!

Instead of giving all in one go, there is a small step to give a breath.
For example, you charge at 7 amp linear :
At 20min, your pack is around 33°.
At 25min, your pack is around 35°
With the step charging :
At 20min till 30min your pack is around 33°
During that middle step, the heat will stay the same if not decrease by 1°.
End temp is also lower.

In order to get more punch high amps is the way to go. But it will also generate pressure in the cell which will make the temperature increasing too fast.
Decreasing for 15 minutes to a very low charge rate, like 0.1 to 0.3 amps allow the cells to stop increasing in temperature but still charging and then the 3rd step is giving the final charge.
The Advantage charger is working on a combination of temperature detection, negative peak detection and maximum mAh in detetection. The first of the 3 reached will end the charge for a super safe operation but also to generate the maximum output power out of the batteries.

More details !
How It Works
During the charge process, oxygen is given off and accumulates as bubbles attached to the cell plates. These gas bubbles reduce the effective surface area and raise the internal impedance of the battery. A momentary high-amplitude discharge (negative) pulse reverses the chemical process and strips the bubbles from the cell plates. The discharge pulse also has a relaxing effect on the battery, increasing charge acceptance and allowing a high-current fast charge at a lower temperature.
