TC3 Drifting setup?
 

Hi can I please have some help with choosing a brushless motor and esc for a old TC3 im building for drifting? So far it has a one-way diff in the rear and a carbon fiber LRP chassis, team factory parts ect. Im looking at getting a Castle Creations 1/10 Sidewinder Sport 4600kV would this be good? or put a motor and esc from a hpi sprint 2 flux in it or Novak "Drift Spec" Brushless ESC/Drift Spec Brushless Motor Combo (13.5T). Also what are the camber setting ect I need to set it at? and any other tweaks for drifting would be most appreciated thank you :)

Any drifters out there that can help please?

I'm pretty new at drifting so my setup may not be ideal but it seems to work. I'm running a front one way with a locked rear diff. Lightweight 25 shock oil all around and have been using a Novak VTA brushless setup. (I had been racing VTA and that was what was in the car) We run on carpet and I found I like the smooth HPI T drift tires best.

So far the mild VTA motor sems to be fine on power but I do have one of the new Novak brushless systems on pre order (wish they would set a release date!) I have a second TC3 with basically the same setup using an old brushed 27 turn stock motor. This works OK but doesn't seem nearly as smooth as the brushless setup.

I've found drifting a lot of fun and a different driving challenge. Just to be different I run with a Chevy Silverado truck body on one and an Yokomo Euro Truck cabover on the other.

Thanks very much DougH! :) what T or Kv is your Novak? cool will try those shock oil weights and T drift tyres. Yip that is different body choices lol, im going to be borring and get a silvia body or maybe a mk1 Ford Escort body if I can find a 200mm one.

What size pinion and spur do you run?

Most of the guys i run with use between 8.5 and 13.5T motors, I use a 10.5T X-car hobbyking motor myself, its cheap and more than powerful enough. There is no hard and fast rules about what turn motor to use, just pick something in that range and you cant go wrong.

Tires: Tires are just about everything, you need to find tires that give you the right amount of traction for your setup and driving style, I prefer more traction so use hard rubber rather than hard plastics.

The Novak VTA motor is a 25.5, like I said very mild. Can't say that I really need much more power for my style but I have one of their new brushless drift sets on pre order, its is a 13.5. Just not sure when is the release/shipping date.

I managed to score a couple freebie TC3's, a dead stock RTR (right down to the Runner ESC) and an older Factory Team car, other than ditching the factory radio and Esc (which is a forward and reverse only, no brake! ) in the RTR and I had been thinking of making a simple drifter out of it. I was going to throw the original tires off my Traxxas Fiesta. Any gearing and alignment settings you guys would reccomend?

Cool BJoe good to hear of another TC3 being setup for drifting. So far ive read people using 0, 1.5 and 2.0 camber all around and 2-3 degree toe in rear and 0 toe in the front. As for gearing ive read 19/72,28/72,30/72 and 21/88

Got the Tazer ESX and the Traxxas "Ralliestangdra" tires are now on mine, just got to convert it over to Traxxas plugs from Deans eventually and put a different body on it.

Just ordered all my parts to finish my project :) got Castle Creations Mamba Max Pro w/Neu Castle 4-pole 1406 (4600kV), hpi t-drifts and nice rims and a silvia body etc, cant wait! ended up get a 25t pinion and 72 spur and will put the one-way back in the front and lock the rear.
