Questions?? When A Motor Feels Like It's Full Of Glue...

When a motor has been overheated or died due to too much timing etc, what actually is it that makes turning the rotor by hand feel like you trying to stir syrup?

When the motors are apart I can easily spin up the rotor in the bearings as they are free, but once everything is assembled and the rotor is in the centre of the stator it won't move freely.

On at least one of my motors that feels like that I can still power it up, but obviously it stops dead almost instantly once I throttle back.

The epoxy probably melted a bit and is coating the inside of the stator. enough to cause the friction you feel.

That's my best guess anyway.

Its caused by the stator being shorted inside from melted wire/epoxy. Its a similar feel to if you get solder across one of the tabs on the outside. It will feel like it binds up.

the case may have warped too due to the heat and misalligned the bearings.

Usually at least one of the Stator windings shorts out - if you put an ohm meter on a pair of solder tabs you can usually see which ones are shorted together. --- sometimes you'll get the same thing if you bridge the solder for your power wires.

+1 - A shorted stator usually explains why a motor won't spin freely by hand.

I finally got my replacement stator through and rebuilt the motor with all the other original parts.

Now it feels like new
