Thanks for any advice!

I came across a TC5 just before having my TC4 ready for USVTA. I had already finished the gear mods and found the motor cam swing to be the limiting factor but also had to open up the webbing in the pinion area. While at it, I made certain to clear up to a 60 tooth pinion.
Changed spur to a 64 pitch 78 tooth. Don't recall what range of pinions work with the limited amount of cam throw but a 48/78 is a 4.06 FDR and 60/78 would take it to 3.25. A 74 tooth spur on a 60 pinion will get it down to a 3.08.
You might be better to rely on a trusted local to provide a good starting point on the ratio and have an assortment of pinions with you near that range of FDR. As always watch the temps.

I took 2 new packs....the Wolfpack and a 6500 65C and ran them 3 x's each and 1 cycle with my LRP Pulsar Touch, about 6-8 mins per round

6500/65c
res 4.2

b. 13.0 fast lap,13.5 avg

5000/25c
res 5.2

a. 13.0 fast lap, 13.4 avg
b. 12.8 fast lap, 13.1 avg
c. 12.7 fast lap, 12.9 avg

both was run about 120 deg and 30 deg timming on the motor.

I like the Reedy packs and the Wolfpack 5000 25c lipo is great. AE/Reedy put us a very good lipo together to use and race in US VTA. And the best part is the price, $70 difference, with very similar results,or even better.

I plan on running these for my US VTA cars.
If the bigger mah battery is no faster why do we need a rule? Just let everyone run what they have as that is cheaper still....

If people get scared and quit because joe blow spent more and has a "better" battery they are VERY uninformed and should be educated instead of catered to.....

I hope you didnt use one of the 6500 65C packs I cycled for you a while back! LOL

Pretty good posting there as long as both batteries were fairly the same age. If they are a few months difference in age that would affect the results.

But it appears that the lower C rating may heat up and be one of the reasons that it runs faster on the track even though it did not show as good cycling (based on your numbers). Thats always been a theory but Ive never tested it until a few days ago when checking temp on a battery while cycling it. It does seem that the lower C rating heats up more than higher C rating which will result in the battery feeling stronger at the end of a run when its warmed up.

It's not the quitting... it's the spending more money to *think* they will go faster. When they've finally wasted enough money and still don't go any faster, THAT'S when they quit.

You can inform them all you want. They won't believe you until they've wasted the money. Follow the rule and people can cross batteries off the list of things to worry about and waste money on.

Excerpt from post #509.

I fundamentally disagree with this position. I think hardly anyone would do this because there is no advantage. There are some clubs that ignore this rule. What is their experience?

The club I race at ignores the mah limit rule simply because it allows new people (to VTA) to use whatever batteries they already own, saving them money.

Instead the rules should be CHANGED to "cater to" johnny-come-lately's who don't want to comply with the existing and proven successful rules package?

Uninformed? Need to be educated? Both could be thrown right back at the chorus.

It doesn't matter one whit if the batteries are a performance advantage or not...people will PERCEIVE that they are and that's all it takes to sour some on the class.

As always, there are a BUNCH of classes out there where you can run any darn battery/esc/motor/whatever you want--feel free to race in those. I've yet to see a race program where the ONLY class they offer is VTA.
