Hey Matt, let me be 1st to welcome you to VTA. Generally speaking a good FDR to start with in VTA is 4.0. It is very important to measure your motor temperature when you make a change to your FDR. You never want your motor to get hotter than 155 F. Many VTA racers setup their car with the smallest spur gear they can find that will fit in their car. Then you start testing your car with a 4.0 FDR and slowly increase the size of your pinion gear by 2 - 3 teeth at a time until you get to where your motor stays between 140 F and 150 F after a 6 minute run.

Really? 180*+ every run with a 1800 mod tuning rotor and the green on a Ballistic 21.5 Sharpied black isn't the way to go?

Buuuuuurrrrnnnnn.

That said I run a 3.96ish FDR and it really depends on your track. 4.0 is a great place to start and watch your temps and lap times.

Hmm I would think motor temp should be the same weather you are doing onroad or offroad and for my offroad 160-170 deg was the magic temp I will be shooting for

I run a 3.8 FDR . We run 10 min mains and it temps out at 150-165 range . This on a medium sized outdoor track .

I'd start around a 3.8? to a 3.9. What kind of chassis are you getting? I try to run the biggest spur gear I can with a little room to go up a tooth or two, that moves my motor as far forward on the chassis as possible and helps me out with the F/R weight bias. I keep a 92,96,100,104, and some larger ones on hand.

I'm still hooked on VTA racing and I've been doing it for three years I think. Still the coolest class out there and my favorite to watch even I'm not racing!

We had a great night of racing last night at Indy RC in Indianapolis. Two full heats of VTA racers and some truly awesome looking cars. And, like most weeks, the new people that came to check out the track or buy at the hobby shop for Christmas seemed to stop what they were doing to watch racing specifically when the VTA carpet pounders were in action!

I just contacted Carl Seils with another order of Allen Green stickers for a new '68 HPI Camaro body. I've been running that scheme on my current body since the Southern VTA Nats back in september, the stickers are still in great shape, the body not so much. I think its time to have a fresh body for ThunderJam V.
