It'll run the motor just fine, it's just like any other sensored motor. However, if you are not running "blinky" settings, it could give you quite an advantage. If you are not running one of the regular approved esc's it is likely to give an advantage and probably wont' be allowed (unless you club allows for a variance temporarily) with USVTA rules. The class is intended to be fair with electronics, so everything is about the same, hence the approved ESC's list.
This I just wanted to run it temporarily until I get an approved ESC.

I have the motor, servo, reciever, sakura s zero - just need ESC and battery.

Ive talked to Eric, several times and Im very proud of him. Guys this is proof again that the USVTA rules are always going to come out on top...1st with the Carpet Nats and now, Pav Nats...ROAR rules are fine, but they dont lead this class to victory...

Congrads to all of you that could make it...Im very sad I couldnt make it, cause I would have put a whooping on ya...lol...

Eric was running Novak GTB2 and Ballastic 25.5 with 40 deg time, with one vented endbell, cause of stripped motor holes...Orion 5000 90C

The really cool thing Im thinking of now, if I can get all the past Champs from this year all under the same roof to battle for the Title....

Dave 2011 USVTA Southern Nats and 2012 Snowbirds USVTA Champ
Eric 2012 ROAR VTA Pav Nats Champ
Tony 2012 ROAR VTA Carpet Nats Champ
Natt 2012 USVTA Scale Nats Champ

come on guys lets make a little history and magic

Ill dance with you, anyday

Indeed, Eric is a heckofa driver. Clean smooth lines throughout the quals and 1st main. It was fun to watch him after I broke a sensor wire early in the first qualifier.

Added note, the 3rd place finisher might be attending the Southern Nats also.

I had new 6500 65c packs in my car from my 17.5 car because I didn't know what my problem was speed wise, and I was trying to eliminate problems. I qualified 4th with a year old 5200 50c pack and probably 80% throttle....because I am a dummy who didn't set up his esc properly...
I softened up my shocks and added timing to the motor for Sunday morning practice. Afterwards, I'm thinking "why didn't I do this Thursday ?" Then the rains came ...

Yeah, the car was working really well, but was flat in that 1st amain qual. I reset my ESC and the car was pretty quick for practice Sunday morning. We ended up getting rained out.

Thanks for all of your help Melvin, Dave Johnson, Paul Lemiux and most of all Myron for taking the time to work with me and get me in that class. Hopefully I can bring it at the southern Nats.

I would start with a popular Rubber tire set up for the 6.1 chassis. Your Servo and speed controller both sound like great options, assuming they are legal where you race. I would also suggest having parts ready so that you can be legal by the USVTA rule set. That way you can come to the big races. FDR is a local thing. What are the dimensions of your track and how long ist the straight? How are the technical sections?
Here are the rules for CVTA in my area http://forums.londonrc.com/showthread.php?t=46319

As for track size. I don't know the length of the straight right now. The season hasn't started yet. The track layout is changed weekly. Some weeks it very technical and others it's more flowing.

A starting set-up is all I am looking for at this point. I can try and tweak it once I get on the track when the season starts in October.

Thanks for your help

Honestly, save money for another week or two (or however long it takes) and buy one ESC that is approved, instead of having to buy two ESC's. The novak club esc and the speed passion reventon (and the Cirtix) are not much more than the Brushless Hobbies esc's. Gens Ace Battery or something similar would be cheap as well, and they work well.

I just want to know 1 thing. As i said earlier, according to many , in this thread theres no reason to run a high c rated pack, as its just wasted. If this is suppose to be taken as true...why then does even Rob reach for a 65c pack looking for speed? Just curious.

I really hope we wont need 5000 90C batteries to be competitive in a cheap class there like $130
