just put the battery in, and turn the pieces until the lights turn on

The way I use it is to discharge the batteries as far as I can get them before a charge. You can use it after a run as well just make sure that as soon as the lights go out on each individual cell (as there is no automatic cut-off), you unscrew that tab...otherwise you'll discharge the cells lower than you want for storage.
