Please excuse the "newbie" questions, but my son Blake will be going down to Texas and racing in the 17.5 blinky or as I believe Roar also calls it Sportsman Stock class. We were going throught the rules for the class and they brought up a question that we would like to verify.

They state no advertising of rc brands on vehicle, apparel or other sources?

So that means no stickers on car besides headlights and tail lights and no rc related t-shirts while racing if we understand correctly? It appears that this class is meant more for the beginners and not for the factory 100 off drivers if we understand correctly?

Maybe we are getting 17.5 blinky mixed up with a more beginner class?

I thought the reason we created blinky is so you don't have to run a Tekin.

Default boosted

I can't make this race unfortunately but no boosted classes offered? The gap in speed from stock to mod for me is too drastic. I can't handle a mod car to compete at the top level so that leaves me with spec. With no intermediate speed offered this race is losing entries I would argue. Why would the Snowbirds and the IIC offer boosted classes and get very solid entries? Because they know what they are doing. I hope boosted isn't dropped or I guess I'll be finding a new hobby.

That's just me though...I hope everyone enjoys this event.

Im certainly not the authority on this... but yes, it does seem that you are getting 17.5 blinky confused with a true "sportsman" class.

AFAIK, ROAR is no longer making a distinction between "sportsman" and sponsored drivers at National events. Events like the IIC and Snowbirds do offer an Amateur Sedan class, but that is not being offered at the Carpet Nationals.

You are free to put whatever stickers you like on your race bodies and wear whatever clothing you like. There will be sponsored drivers racing in the Stock/17.5 Blinky classes....

Both. Allow any motor that fits the specs but with no limit on the wind. Sure you will get rookies that throw in a 4.0 but that is part of the learning process. The off-road guys seem to be able to regulate themselves so I am sure smarter on-road guys can do even better. Then you can separate drivers into skill levels by racing them separately or racing them together but awarding each class separately..

There probably should be a middle class but in my opinion it should be blinky 13.5. Boost needs to die.

Steve,

Bummer you can not go. But i personally like the idea of blinky in everything, But i also think there needs to be a class in the middle. I am pretty positive that there is going to be a 10.5 class to be in the middle of mod and 17.5 . I think 13.5 will be going away on a national level, maybe not a local level but who knows. I think in the end this will be the best for everyone. People will adapt and hopefully it will grow.

This is something that is tough to understand, but in the end, I see it as a step in the right direction. And let me just state my point. I love running boosted motors. I am just trying to expound what I think I understand from ROAR's point of view, not trying to hijack, there have been tons of threads on this already.

ROAR's responsibility is varied, amongst it, there are some conflicting interests: serving the Hobbyist, serving the pro racer, serving IFMAR and developing fast drivers to compete on the world stage.

In two of the above categories, we are failing miserably right now, serving the Hobbyist and developing fast drivers on the World Stage.

In an effort to service the hobbyist and "simplify" the racing they took away boost from the slower classes.

In an effort to develop faster racers in the IFMAR categories, they took away the "boosted" class.

The way it seems to me is that this was a 2 step process, sort of independent of each other, trying to achieve 2 different things, while at the same time attempting to serve the "greater good" of the hobby looking towards the future.

Does this make everyone happy? ABSOLUTELY NOT. But not everyone was happy having boost before. It always seems to be 50-50 either way. Unfortunately this seems to be the reality of almost everything in our lives these days. I guess that's just the culture of our generation where choices are unlimited and accessible in almost everything in our daily lives. I know I did not like the boosted class going away, and thought it was a shun on technology, regardless of the brand of Speedo I run.

However, recently we have been playing with higher turn boosted mod motors-anything from a 7.5 to a 13.5 and we discovered that our lap times were close to the same as with a 4.0 turn motor. SPECIALLY at Mike's. Their last layout was so tight that mod and stock times were almost the same, if not faster with stock motors. Chris Adams, for example had a fast lap of 10.5 with a blinky 17.5. Mike Dumas had a fast lap of 10.2 with a 4.5 turn motor. From our experience, a boosted 17.5 should be good for about 3 tenths per lap, so in theory, that motor should put you right on top of some of the fastest open mod times.

Now of course you probably won't win the mod class with a 17.5 boosted motor, but in reality you probably wouldn't win the 17.5 boosted class with pro's racing in it either. However, you might be competitive in the mod class with a boosted 17.5 or 13.5 motor. I know personally, I am taking the 4.0 out of my car and putting in something milder. Whenever I did that in practice, my fast lap went from 10.7 to a 10.5. With a little more tweaking on the motor, I am sure I could drop another tenth or two.

So it seems like boost still has it's place. In the Mod Class. It's kinda like a turbo vs displacement battle.
