Default "Old Fart"

Being an "Old Fart" doesn't make you mature. I speak from personel experience. I'm older and have been playing with toy cars longer than most, started with slot cars in the early 60's.

Annoying too

Heres two problems that people new to the hobby just don't have anymore: hot batteries, and brush bounce. One of my last sets of NiMH cells had battery bars (soldered myself!) that had little heat sinks on them!

I'm NOT old but I remember taking the batteries and motors out of Makita drills. GE NiCad batteries that I believe were rated at 1200mA. Sanyo came out with 1700mA batteries and suddenly there was a chance we wouldn't dump before the end of a three minute off road race (although about 1/3 of the cars broke and the other 1/3 dumped anyways). Still the batteries kept your hands warm at night races...

One of the best Ye Olde stories that I heard (I think it was from Lonny or RacinJ) was that at the first 1/12 worlds to be held on a carpet track, the carpet was so grippy that all of the chassis of the day were out of their comfort zone and scrubbed speed badly. I believe this race was held in Denmark, and it just so happened that the locals had a coin with a 0.250" hole in the middle of it, so people started bolting them to their axle as a flywheel to hold speed through the corners.

Supposedly its true, it was before my time though.

Very true. Here is the picture of the Dutch coin.

This car is on display at Cline Hobbies in Chandler. I had the chance look it over.

I ran one of those cars for a few years.

It's true but it was on the pinion... Here's Bud Barto's car from that era with the mod.

This only seemed to work on very large, fast, flowing, tracks. I saw it tried in Cleveland on few cars but it didn't seem to produce any advantage.

Looked cool though.

So, probably not a good idea at most tracks. Then again, I'm running a 50 tooth pinion, so it already flywheels a bit

Battery wars! Neisinger had more left at the end. Panasonics were the touchiest batteries ever.
