Default What 17.5 motor to buy

I know this will bring much debate but i have been out of 12 scale for a while and i am getting back in and need a new motor. We run 17.5 with turbo and boost. I am looking at some trinity motors but not sure what to get any help would be good.

Trinity D3 was always a great motor for me in 1/12

ReVtech! It's a D3 with more timing!

I really like the Thunder Power motors! I have had a few issues with the RevTech, I will not use it for boosted anymore. I believe it was built for non-boosted class anyway with all that timing you can put into it. The D3 is a great motor too!!

Just be aware that the Rev has some issues with motor can screws, and there's an alarming trend developing of them melting down when used with boost in the traditional manner.

I'd stick with a D3 or an X-12, both are proven winners that are very robust, easy to understand, and respond very well to boost.

The D3 has been a good motor and as far as the X-12 I'v had no luck with it.
My old Novak SS has been good and strong.

I also think the TP motors are great. Very fast for both off road and on.

Whatever motor you choose, I would keep it at 'factory' timing. Especially running boost or turbo.. or both. It will help keep everything simple until you really understand what each degree of timing is doing to the overall feel of the throttle.

And as a side note, the motor is not nearly as important in a boosted class then it is a "stock" based class. So trying to get the latest and greatest motor should not always be at the top of the agenda!

Really? I have ran the X12 with no issues. Can you explain your luck with it so I know what to possibly look for?

I think the Reedy Sonic is the motor of choice since its quick out of the box. It comes standard with a 12.5 mm rotor which will generate more torque which i think is most important with stock racing. My Rev tech is quick and high revving but lacks the torque. Most guys at my track that run Thunder Power used optional rotors to optimize speed.

It doesn't matter what setttings I run it just not up to the pace of the other motors and tends to come off always hot--maybe I just have got a bad one?

The issue may be the standard of "hot". HOT for most standard motors is 160. HOT for an X12 is 210. The X12 can withstand running above 200 without letting the magic smoke out, which is certainly NOT the case with other motors at their 'roll over and die' temperature.

Specifically in 1S racing WGT/12th, the X12 doesn't seem to fall off as much as a Duo1/2/3 when it gets hot, either. Get one of those above 140ish and it's going to feel like old nicads dumping!

It's all in what you want. The D3 is an RPM motor, the X12 is a torque motor. Both can be just as fast. But most people understand RPM more than they do torque.

If you're running a Tekin, I'd get a D3. If you're running an LRP, I'd get an X12.

I'm set up running Tekin with the X-12 and had the roll out up to 101 mm, as with my D3 around 78 mm with fastlap at the track.
I do have a LRP and will give it a try. What would you recommend on the insert as now I been running it with the 4 dots installed.
Thanks for the info.

So rather then post another what motor thread, I'll resurrect this one.

So, I run boosted 17.5, looking for a new motor. Short list is duo 3, sp v3 mmm, and reedy sonic. I don't like the idea of timing inserts, so I'm concerned about the sp, and I can't seem to find the duo 3 in stock anywhere (my ideal choice). The reedy looks good too, but I dont know much about it.

My main concern is the timing on the sp, currently I have my tekin redline set at 0deg motor timing. How would that translate to the sp or other motors?
