Yokomo also had a 4wd mini size car that also was more of a novelty than anything else. It disappeared just like the Xray T1M did.
There are still some 4wd minis out there such as the ABC Hobby Genetic 4wd mini, but as already mentioned nobody races these except perhaps at the club level.

There is not official racing at the moment for the mini's but I know people have them.
I appreciate the information, and yes to see it seems like the M03 /M05 would be better balanced?
So to answer you question of racing or bashing, I think I would be a combination of both. I don't see myself running my cars on the street, if anything I can see my self running solo at the track or making some sort of autoX track at my tennis court.

If Tamiya wanted to get into the mini 4wd cars they should have used the 30th anniversary Porsche TA05 chassis and shrink it 20mm more. Standard size 540 motor (like everyone else) and standard battery size (like everyone else)

2wd and 4wd are 2 different animals. The fun of a 2wd is the challenge to be able drive it well, especially if it a rwd. Mini 4wd pretty much is a shrunken TC. If you want a 4wd mini, I'd just get an ABC Genetics.

What really bothers me is the placement of the servo and the battery. It should've been flipped, servo mounted in the middle and the LiPO pack strapped in the rear of the car. The TA05 VDF (and other high end belt driven drift chassis) is designed this way and allows the pack to stick out of the chassis. Hopefully, an aftermaket company will release a lower deck to move the servo up towards the front allowing us to strap a LiPO shorty pack in the rear. The way it sits now if the battery is too long it'll hit the servo/steering linkage.
Although having to clear a battery pack can be achieved simply by using a linkage with a bend in it.

Same as the Yokomo, the Xray was basically a shortened touring car, restricted to using full size touring car wheels and therefore the limited to the Yokomo mini stratus body. The Yokomo and Xray minis were also limited to a 4 cell battery pack, while the purpose designed minis all ran 6 cell.
They were both jumping on the interest in 4wd minis by knocking together parts bin specials rather than a serious look at making competitive minis. They weren't even legal for racing. No wonder they died.

at my club where both M05 and M06 run together in the same class, the M05s are much faster. the M06s just can't compete.
if you are considering the M05, get the M05 s-spec. the transponder mount in that kit is attached to the right side of the motor which solves alot of balancing issues. that part is only included in the M05 s-spec. and it's not sold separately.

I am open to suggestions:
Based on my HW this is what I have been able to figure out.
MA05 with Body:
Electronics
and body
All plastic and metal not blue alum parts
no oil shocks?
But, Iam not sure where the pro and spec fit or how they are different form each other.
The pro kit seems to have CLEAR plastic TRF oil shocks some some blue parts
The spec kit seems to have BLACK plastic TRF oil shocks and again some blue parts.
Does anyone have a break down or parts included?
Ill tell what I think its important to me:
Alum. steering assembly
Alum. TRF shocks
Alum. Motor mount (to dissipate heat)
Which kit has those parts or will get me closer to that?

I realized the it has most of the part I wanted to upgrade. Its a shame the shocks are plastic still.
Now my only "dislike" is the chassis. Does anyone want to trade me a black one?
I also need to start looking at bodies, I was thinking of one of the ABC bodies. Maybe the Civic type R or the Mitsubishi. Does anyone have any experience with either one?
As far as motor, what typically goes in these minis?

if you don't like any chromed plastic... spray on some caustic ovencleaner
(i use EzyOff caustic formula not the greenie non-caustic can)
and it'll disappear faster than a $2 hooka with your wallet
We are limited to EZRUN 13T with the 35A ESC or blackcan Sporttuned.
Doesn't sound like much but 13T with biggest pinion (20) pushes the mini
to scarily decent speed... any 'faster' motor just wheelspins anyway.
ABC shells usually better than any cheap Colt effort.
