The 04S is a very sturdy and durable design, but it also lacks a lot of features that the TB comes with. The biggest difference is that the S comes with Gear Differentials, where the TB comes with Ball Diffs. For a beginner, Gear diffs are really easy because you just build them and run. You don't need to adjust them like a Ball Diff. But the car won't handle as well as one with ball diffs. The one thing about the TB 02 (and the Evo 3 to some point) is that the front gears can take a pounding and get pretty beat up. It's worse when running a front one-way than a front diff though. I would actually see if you could find a good deal on an 04R, 04R Tuned, or 04 TRF chassis over either.

Are you buying them new or 2nd hand? becasue if u r getting them new, may be try n 2nd hand 04R for a cheap price. Much much better than both of them

Thanks for the info. Second hand is preferred since cash is a little tight. I would like something newer than my Xpress to start racing. No one races Tamiya locally (mostly Xray, AE). Those are great cars, but I like to be different.
I'll keep my eyes out for a 04 variant.

I currently have an 04 Pro with both ball diffs with lightweight outdrives and optional one way for further down the road. THis car has been extremely durable with top and bottom carbon reinforced graphite. This car is excellent to drive and because it is older many people have had it and can help set it up in a fairly neutral starting point. From there, only subtle changes are needed to make it ride well Even the Tamiya site has a setup sheet to start off with that can really help out.
As for the TB02(AKA Evo3 with Tub chassis), I finish alot more races with my o4 than the ones driving Tb02 do due to the diff troubles mentioned in previous posts. IT is an excellent chassis for those who have rare minimal crashes. The diffs seem to pay the price in wall crashes.
The 04 is a little havier than some newer models but it is VERY durable. Want evidence, go to LHS and compare the control arms of TC3 to those of the 04. Durability will be VERY evident. As a relative nebie myself, I will say that durability is more important at this stage than blinding speed.
If you want to see how my o4 looks, I can pics. Not really thinking of selling but you might like to see one built.
