smoked motor seems ok

o i just ran a motor for the first time(used) I belive it to be pretty new with new brushes so i ran the first pack slowly without problems. on the second pack i ran it normal with alot of stop and go and the motor smoked away at the end of the run. However after smoking it ran fine. i took the motor strait out and it was easy to handle not to hot at all but pretty oily. Im thinking it may of had excessive oil in the motor or something that got hot. has anyone ever had this problem? brushes are not purple or anything. its a reedy spec motor

Was it a lot of smoke? like say thick white smoke. if so the motor is more than likely toast. Your other option is putting the motor on a dyno to test it or try running it and see if there are any ill effects. I have never had it happen to me. Most the time when i smoke a mottor its done.

Oil in your motor ??

JonBoy 11-01-2004 04:33 PM

well i took it apart and cleaned it up and still fine. it smoked about 2/3 into the pack and i kept running it till pack died. it ran kinda crappy when it was smokin and ran kinda crappy for that 5 sec or so but the rest of the 1/3 pack ran pretty much normal. as far as the oil yeah seemed oily. i cleaned it up and just running it not in car seems fine.

also i got it undergeared by about 4 teeth if this makes a difference.

You probably cooked the epoxy covering the armature; it's toast. Your magnets are probably wasted, too.

I agree with Smcpot.
Same thing happened to me but I was able to save my magnets. Armature is garbage. My incident was most likely the effects of gearing.

why is it still running then? and it wasnt all that hot.

mtc3od 11-01-2004 06:55 PM

dude,
If it wasnt hot, and it still runs just fine, you probably got a piece of carpet or whatever you were running on in the motor and it burned up, got smashed, or like you said, a little bit of Oil got on the brushes. As long as it is running dont worry.
