If you are in a responsible financial institution, you also have to consider the issue of "redundancy". You might have four separate AC units in a computer room whereas three would do to meet the tonnage requirements. This is so you can have one in reserve for breakdowns and/or be able to shutdown one for servicing.

You guys rock. Thanks for the howstuffworks link, and JRX-S, thanks for the clear explanation. I agree with you on redundancy and having enough capacity with reserve in case of failure. It seems at this point we're operating near capacity, with no reserve, other than 5-foot-diameter mobile room fans for backup. Sad, sad state of affairs here.

In my mind, you would look real good to management if you recommended getting an HVAC consultant to get your company through this issue. You would learn a lot about a/c from a consultant. Checking with local International Facilities Management Association (IFMA) would be a good start. Maybe you should be the Facilities Manager...
