Hi Steve a question about whether a motor is ok or not. I recently had my Spread Sektrum GTB stop after a couple of races running a 5.5 with sintered rotor. You guys very kindly replaced it and suggested the fets may have been shorted out and to check the wiring. This was the first thing I did when it stopped and could not find a problem. Now I have the replacement is there any way I can check the motor (besides connecting it to my GTB) to make sure was it was not the cause of the speedy failing?? I am a little apprehensive about putting everything back as it was and suffering the same fate. I know I can run my 4.5 and 3.5 but I want to run the 5.5 and know its ok. Any suggestions on how to check it out besides running it on someone elses GTB?? Thanks Drew.

Hey Dash,
The ESC and motor should mount up just fine in your mini... I'm not sure that you will be able to get suitable gearing for the 4.5 motor though... generally speaking the 4.5R is a very high RPM motor and to gear it properly you need to put a pretty small pinion gear in your car.
That being said it still might be a bit much power for the drivetrain in your car to handle... but I've never tried it so I can't really say for sure.
I would say try putting the smallest pinion gear on that you can find and carefully monitor the temperature of the ESC and motor while running.
We like to see temps under 175 degrees.

Hey Drew,
Unfortunately there's really no way for you to run or check your motor there by yourself.
I take it you didn't send your motor in with your spread spectrum GTB when you had it replaced or else we would have given that the once over while we had it.
We generally like to see both the motor and the ESC in the event of a failure just to prevent a situation like this.
There are some rudimentary things you can do such as check to see that the rotor spins smoothly and doesn't get caught at any point or smell it or even take the front side endbell off to inspect for shorted coils, but there is nothing you can really do on your own to check the status of the sensors in the motor.
More than likely the motor is ok... I very rarely see motor failures and when I do they are very obvious motor failures, IE bearing failures.
I hope this helps out!

Hey Steve,
I have the regular GTB, but just got the spektrum system. Can I sent it in for an upgrade? How much would it cost?

Thanks Mike!
Yeah, wasn't really feeling up for a hot day out at corona... maybe some other time!
Joe,
Thanks for putting that up there! I knew we had the information somewhere it was just late last night and didn't have the energy to look it up!

I think if the air quality was poluted to 2000 ppm in the LA area we wouldn't be having this discussion...we would have all asphixiated long ago
