out of curiosity, being i am building my own (nothing serious, just fun as there is no drag racing near me)
what makes the direct drive cars not as fast,to stiff/not stiff enough, not enough gear options
just wanting to know what makes for a better chassis as i build mine

The Dragster and Funny Car chassis posted are designed and built by Dragraceconcepts.com. They are called A-51 Driveline Chassis. As posted in the pics, they are a in-line drive system that makes the chassis super consistant with launch and handeling.
The A-51 Driveline Dragster Chassis was the first chassis in Electric 3 Cell Top Fuel to break into the 1.2' zone last year at the Worl Finals in Atlanta Georgia. Steve Saik and Bryant Ruff both had the honors of dipping into the 1.2'. At the end of the day Chris Smith barely edged Steve Saik out for the current record.
All of the Electric A-51 and Nitro A-51 Chassis have been super sucessful and are leading the way in R/C Drag Racing today.
If anyone has questions they can contact me via email or call (phone number on website).

Ozzy,
Driveline or "direct drive" cars are not slower then a standard "sidewinder" style car. It has been shown that both cars are equally as fast in 3 cell top fuel. They take different set ups to achieve the same results. They both have there ups and down. Driveline cars are super consistant with leaving the line straight, but there is a limited 430 gear ratio at the moment. We are working on a 460 gear ratio as we speak. With a driveline car your gear change would come with tire size. Most guys will figure out a tire size for there combo and stick with that tire size.
The sidewinder has unlimited gear options, but is not as consistant with leaving the line straight like the driveline car.
If you race extreme then the sidewinder is the way to go for right now. In extreme its all about weight, and with no weight rules the sidewinder is great. 3 Cell T/F has a 40 oz minimum so the extra weight of the driveline set up is not crucial (car is under weight when built). Steve Saik will be competing in extreme this year with a driveline car. We are confident he can go mid teens with the driveline car.
So many choices, that is why we build Driveline and Sidewinder cars, everyone has there own taste.

In the nitro classes the driveline set up is the only way to go. You are easily a tenth off the pace if you are not running a driveline car.
In electric it is 50/50 there are alot of driveline cars out there that are fast. The gear ratio's are what they are. We have to take what is available from 1/8th scale on road or off road cars to build the gear sets. Granted they are heavily modified after we get them. Idealy a 5.0 or 50/10 would be perfect. Untill one of the big box companies makes a spiral gear set in that size we will work with what is available.

Well I was only saying they have worked well for me.
I don't care what anyone runs as long as they race and help build up our sport. This wasn't about peeing on trees, it was simply my opinion from RC drag racing 20+ years as compared to another that I don't know has ever RC drag raced before.
I think I made it clear my let down with drive-line cars was soley based on their current inability to change gears without running strange tires sizes. I also said how much I love this particular car, Ken builds a beautiful piece of racing equipment all you have to do is take on look at the car and see the craftsmanship is superb in fact really beyond anything else on the market.

Most of my racing has been in full scale,so you got me there.
Less some 1/10 scale off road local wins in the 80"s.
Before I went Barry Grant and aero,
9 second street car with air conditioning.
It was a laptop car before laptops were cool.

I have a standing order from DRC when the 460 gear ratio comes out.
Right now I am putting my trust in Mike Smith Tires.
He has the foam compound that will hook up.
I gave him my specs and he cut and trued some foams for me,
one diameter for rail and another for Funny Car.
After the 460's Mike will make the changes I need.
The taller tire size will act like a two speed when the tire expands on the top end.
