Mine is sitting in its original box as a rolling chassis, maybe one of these days I have to make this car ready to run again. I still got 8 packs from the old days, 4 Sanyo 1700Scrc (Black) and 4 Sanyo RC2000. They are in deep sleep mode LOL. As for motors, I got a few. Mod: Reedy Tri-Sonic 14-triple, Trinity D3.5 14-Quad and Maxtec 14-Double. Stock: raven, midnight, x-star, green machine3, fire hawk-handout motor from Cleveland race, midnight2 based Matrix motor.

seeing that there are a number of you who were racing back in the 80s, i'm just curious to know - how competitive were the tamiya 1/12 2wd back in the 80s? did it hold its own against the AEs, Corallys, etc .. ? its chassis layout is quite different from all other 1/12s.

Which Tamiya 1/12 are you referring to? They had 1/12 F1s and 1/10 group Cs, but I don't recall any 1/12 pan car from Tamiya.

It's a great kit
I was surprised at how well this car handles.
Kit tires are perfect for outdoors.
Raced it at Camarillo in Ca, back in the early 90's, and won 12th stock, straight out of the box. Silvercan & stick pack et all
Here it is, been sitting a while.
Guess I have a restore project on my hands.
Btw the gear diff seemed to work well too.
I was surprised at how well this car handles.
Kit tires are perfect for outdoors.

Wow, thanks for posting the pictures. I forgot about that one. It has double deck chassis design, wow! Very cool!
I didn't mind gear diff when I was racing F1 class during early 90s, I was running Kyosho SR5 chassis which cost was about $70 or $80. Didn't buy the Impress because it was twice expensive.

I dont know about Europe,but here in Japan its hard to find anybody that used one for racing.The few references I have of Tamiya being raced in a national level event are only for the RM mark1 (Lola),after this chassis all of Tamiya`s cars were a year or more behind the technology curve.For example by the time the RM5 was released other companies all ready had ball diffs,height adjustable gear boxes,"T" bars and oil dampers.Tamiya didnt have any of these features.
My buddy runs a RM5 and its a nice car but the fact that you could get a much better handling car for the same price at the time here in Japan could be why you never saw them beeing raced seriously.

Can you just imagine how beautiful a kit they could build today
Btw, I raced that old 85' RM kit some 8 years after it's release, and it still handled well, with out any mods.
Quite a feat !

Hmm, looking at the box art of that Toyota, it says 1/12. The page from that link for tamiya club is showing 1/12 for the Porsche 956. I think the 956 looks awesome! Yes, Tamiya should re-release those similar to what they did for Group C kits. The only kit is still available is the Mercedes Benz C11 #58351

The Porsche 956 was built by Porsche in 1982 to replace the 936 in the Group C racing class. The 956 was a 2.65 litre twin-turbo car that output 620bhp. The Porsche trio of 956 cars competed in the Le Mans race of 1982, and took 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the race showing how good the new car was.
To bring the 956 model to the public Tamiyia went back to the design board to put together the latest in the Racing Master series of cars. Kit 58042 was unveiled as Mark 5 in the series and was a great acheivement in 1/12th pan racers. The car was quite fragile with the lexan shell, but was a very fast car at the time in the hands of a good driver.
