Default MO3 Gear box.

hi.
Ive put a new gear box in a brand new chassis and its really noisey. I've had 3 other chassis's before. Once i had to mill a small amount out of the inside of the gear box and this stoped it.
I've done that to the new one but doesnt make any diffence.
Does any one know how to fix this noise?

thanks

M-03's always end up noisy don't they? As long as it still rolls freely, I wouldn't worry.

A little sanding on the ends of the gears and shimming goes a long way towards quieting them up. Stock, the gears and case rub all over the place.

I just did this on my new M04 and it's pretty quiet...LOL...at least compared to my other MO3 mini.

Any time.

I'm not an expert on them, but I did notice at the TCS regional that some of the Minis were SUPER quiet compared to others...so I know it's possible.

you shouldnt have to shim, file, mill anything in the mini gearbox, all you need is new gears and a pinion and it should be quiet for a couple of meetings before everything starts to wear again.

your M-03 gearbox is noisy? ok... had that problem before with that on my m-03 and also on my FF-02 (same chassis as m-03) and tl-01... and surprisingly, the best way to keep the noise down is to change your pinion gear... a new pinion gear has a good mesh with the spur and the noise level is low.

but a worn pinion will not mesh properly and will create noise plus wear down the spur even further...

in a season of racing my m-03, i actually went through 3 pinion gears before i even replaced the spur...

I guess this is where I should provide some context..."noisy" means "the typical TL-01 gear-drive sound".

I've had 3 of them...I have plenty of new Tamiya pinions and new gearbox gears. I sanded the sides of the gears for clearance, shimmed them the right way and even the "old" gears got quieter. The new one is even quieter than that.

They're not Pro 4/Yokomo quiet, but they're TC-3 quiet.

You could see marks inside the gearbox halves and on the gears where they rub.

Could somebody please tell me if the TL-01 spur gears, counter gear etc are identical to the M-03 spur gears, counter gears etc? Are the M-05 gears also the same? Thankyou.
