I know the gear ratios are getting higher every year, but with the 49teeth 48p Robinson spur gear you get 2.6fdr with the 47tooth pinion , 2.84fdr with the 43tooth pinion , 2.98fdr with the 41tooth pinion, etc.... So Robinson Racing got it covered well !!!! Now the only issue with the tub tc4 is that you will have to dremel the part of the tub chassis directly under the area where the pinion gear will be after fitting the motor in the car !!!!! If you forget to do that you will break the electric motor's rotor !!!!!!

What part of the cam are you cutting?

No prob Ron. I think ambient air was mid 80's then. I had to come off the gear a little and drop one or two off of turbo for those 100 degree days. We also had that long front straight all the time then, so the motor had room to breathe. If the track layout is tighter, then adjust accordingly.

The sides of the teardrop near the top motor screw hole. Put the cam without the motor on it in the cam mount, and rotate it back and forth. You will see the sides of the cam hit the cam mount.

With the Tc3 you just ground out the plastic tub... with the Tc4 you have to mod the cam mount itself...

Yup spot on! I'll try to take a picture of mine later and post it. You cut down the tear drop motor mount CAM so you can get more rotation away from the Spur so you can fit the larger Pinions...

Your motor and speed control can only turn x amount of rpm and give x amount of power (of course now with speed controls and motor timing you can change this a bit)... The spur and pinion combination is going to change so that you can optimize the top speed of your setup while also having a good amount of low end acceleration to launch and power out of corners...

having your gearing off too much on either end of the scale will result in either limited top speed or no low end acceleration while also overworking your motor setup and overheating/damaging your electronics...

That's the basics... as for what you want to do with your car the best thing is to speak with experienced racers at your local track or post your full motor setup and get a ballpark # to start with here...

i.e.
motor:
motor timing:
speed control:
boost setting or none for "blinky" 0-timing:
spur gear:

For those of you looking to massage your motor cam, check over in the VTA thread for a series of how-to pictures.

Motor cam massaging does not go far enough, you will still have to switch your spur gears to 48p Robinson 49t, 52t, or 55t to get the high gearing necessary for racing !!!!!!

Here are pics... You can see with 65/40 I can still turn the motor away and leave a considerable gap... I haven't tried in a while since I run 4.06 FDR and it's working for me but I am pretty sure it fits 65/45 which is a 3.61 FDR on a TC3/4...

You can get down to 2.6fdr in a tc3/4 with the 48p Robinson pinions and spurs that are much smaller than a 65t/40t combo or 65t/45t combo ! Rotational mass will be an issue the bigger the gears used ! It is preferable to have smaller, lighter pinions and spurs to achieve the same Fdr !!!!!!!

AM03GT,

I notice that you only trimmed your cam, how come you didn't trim your motor mount?

Why customize 2 pieces when 1 will suffice... The Cam is easier to work on and so far I don't need any more adjustment... Only if i needed even more rotation would I consider grinding the motor mount...

If you have a 2" wide spur, and a 1" wide pinion... how does tooth pitch affect ratio (other than 48 being less adjustable than 64 pitch)?

I just wanna be sure im understanding what you are saying here... cause a ratio is a ratio is a ratio.

And im sorry but, a little rotational mass in a shaft car is NOT a bad thing... unless youre running sick HP. Odds are tho, if you are running sick HP... you dont run it in a shaft car.
