TC4 "tub" cars are selling here and on e-Bay with GOOD packages of parts and/or accessories for $100-$150. I bought one last month (my first...to keep the TC3's I still use company) for $130 shipped that came with three new motors (2 19T, 1 Stock) a full extra set of IRS Big Dawg aluminum bones to complement the set that is on it, and a bunch of spare suspension parts. Great value, and you'll go as fast with it as you will with anything while you learn.

Here's an example that ended yesterday: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...ME:B:WNA:US:12

Here's a GREAT use for TC's:

Our club is starting a Vintage TA/Muscle car class. HPI Camaro, 'Cuda and Mustang/Shelby GT350 bodies (or similar "vintage") with NO WING. Must use the HPI Vintage series tires and wheels, width (26 or 31mm) to driver's choice. To differentiate it from TC we'll probably run them with 4-cells and 19T spec motors which made them so you still have to drive them to keep a good line. 5-cell with 27T stock was pretty close to the same but 5-cells are a bastard number no matter how you slice it where plus the 19T come with bearings for maintenance and long life.

We were originally going to require 3+ year old chassis designs (which the TC4 tub is now) but it looks like I may be vetoed on this. The idea was to get use out of old chassis we had laying around or are cheap to buy. FT TC3's are common as dirt at $50-75. What we're looking at now is a weight penalty like "real" TC. Since all the cars have at least 6 battery slots if you place in the top 3 at a race we'll add an unconnected battery cell to your car in the battery tray. Place top 3 again, we give you another battery to carry around. And so on. Run out of battery slots and we'll start taping them on top of your diff or something (this is where the 5000 battery slots on an Associated TC come in handy )

I'll look into the Xray (hey, can't hurt), I just prefer the more mainline brands. Mainly because once a company like Xray decides it doesn't want to make parts anymore, *poof*, zero parts availability.

I was watching that auction that was posted, I expected it to get sniped at the last minute and didn't think it would go that low. I liked the aluminum parts on that car but the lack of description and so-so chassis photos made me a little leary. There's still plenty of time before the winter season.

I have to check with my shop, but I've also been toying with the idea of a 1/10th 2wd elec buggy instead. The track has these cool carpet gap jumps and I have a feeling they will make that class very popular. Plus then I can run the car in the dirt in the summer. I also think I can make like a "rally" version of a buggy fairly easy that would dominate the jumps and the carpet over stock buggies.

dont get me wrong, Xray makes an awesome car, and their TCs are proven. It's jsut that you pay for that top quality, and frankly, you won't be able to realize the cars potential (any chasis for that matter) your first season or two anyway, and by the time your driving/tuning skills have sharpened enough there will be a new Xray or Corrally or Tamiya or TC platform out that is the "newest latest greatest" thing that everyone is driving.
Not to mention that Xray parts are quite a bit pricier than Tamiya or Associated parts.

Yeah, a quick ebay review showed that while xrays are beautiful cars and the idea of one designed strictly for foam/carpet racing is appealing, they're outta my budget.

Theres a guy at my track who got the whole right front ripped off and he replaced it with tc4 parts.

what pitch gears are you running? I know with 48 pitch the norm is 6 over wind, so if you're runnin 19T, then you should run a 25 tooth pinion.

You don't suppose the number of teeth on the spur gear matter at all in this general solution do you?

I know it's usually six over wind with the stock spur gear for 48 pitch. I don't know what the stock spur is for the TC4 as mine is a 64 pitch, 100 tooth. Also, speaking from experience as far as making the jump from off road to on road, it's definately a whole new experience.

SORRY! It's just the stock spur 48 pitch 72 tooth, i'm thinking a 31 ,32 or 33 tooth pinion but not sure if it will fit, mite put a smaller spur on like a 69

any good setups for this car?????

Thanks Tom

when talking about spur gears and pinion gears keep in mind that the FINAL DRIVE RATIO is really what matters, not how many teeth you have on your spur or your pinion gears. use www.gearchart.com to print out a couple of charts for your car and take it from there.
