link car choice
These days, the layout and also the performance of the various side spring cars from Xray, Serpent, AE, CRC, Speedmerchant, etc has evolved to the point that they are all very very similar. There are relatively subtle detail variations in the back end from one brand to the next. There's a wider disparity in the way that each brand executes their front end. But even up front, the end results are very similar one brand vs the others. So the choice should probably be based on the level of product support that you can expect from a given company and also from other drivers in your area who might be able to help you with a given car. Also key is the availability of parts for the car of your choice in your area. And your personal preference for the details of each car is an important factor. They are all good cars these days. Maybe the tie breaker could be price. In that arena, none of the other offerings can touch CRC's pricing for their GenXL, which can be had for under $200 from a variety of sources (including directly from CRC on their website).

ON carpet at TQ in Chino the CRC and AE 12r5 are the current top choices for cars. Price point and parts availability are second to none as well. It depends on what day it is as to which is faster---their very equal.

The CRC is maybe the fastest car out there. I have seen a few fellows
switching to a 12R5, they never got their previous CRC lap times again.
BUT!
The car is fragile (front end, upper pod plate) and the screws are crap.
IMHO the CRC is not a beginners car...

I'm not sponsored for any particular 12th car, so I'll try to give an unbiased opinion.
First vafactor's advice is very good. If you race the same car as others in your area you will get better support.
Every car has it's good and bad points, and I don't know of one that is perfect.
On the two cars you mention. Everyone I know who runs the Serpent has changed it to run damper tubes. An official conversion will be out soon. If you get that car wait until you can get the tube conversion. Everyone I know who has run the XII link has since swapped to another car. That might tell you something....
I run a CRC Gen-XL. No it isn't standard, it has long arm front suspension, braces, thicker pod top, Al posts and pod side so it is quite a bit more expensive than the standard car. It is definitely the quickest 12th I have ever driven though. The Associated R5.1 is also a very good and quick car. You do have to be careful when building the shocks, but they are probably the only weak point. The absolute quickest car out there at the moment is probably the V-Dezign Carpet Ripper 4.0. This is only available as a conversion kit though so not good as a first 12th.
I'd go for either the Gen-XL or R5.1, whichever is most used in your area.
