i started at the solid bottom pushing the ends up with both thumbs..
once it was on, i used a small flathead to try to center the spring.
they are not all center but fairly close

I found that swearing lots helped. It fit better after I threw it across the room. I stretched that last one a little with a pair of pliers and then used the back of a screw driver.

Im having issues finding a pinion spur combo too w/out upgrading the motor mount.
Could one go 64p? i cant find 48p that has the predrilled holes. and you need the holes to be able to screw in the motor.

I found these two. could I use them?
and would the work fine w/out modifying or buying different part?

The attached photo has 6 inner holes. The Zero S spur gear holder requires 4 holes, you should at least look for a spur gear with 8 inner holes. The Xenon gears will work also.

3Racing also has the 64p spurs with the "pre-drilled" holes:

The Zero "S" can only accept the maximum size of 80T 48p (or 106T 64p) spur gear... due to the rear gear diff housing.

"Precision Racing" have their spur gear with outer holes also... but I am not sure if it is compatible with the Zero's spur gear holder. Don't bother with the "XRay" spur gears... it will not fit.

Have you tried Robinson Racing 48P machined spur gears? I think the Pro Machined Spur gears will work (I'll find out when I get my Zero S after Christmas).

Just an update on my problem.

I've since swapped out the kit servo saver for a tamiya high torque.
Veering on hard acceleration on the straight is eliminated, and the car now tracks very straight.

Might wanna consider a servo saver in your 'must haves' or 'upgrade' list.
Although I swapped out the whole thing, i believe the problem lies just in the servo saver horn, which flexes too much under load. 3Racing sells just the horn itself, in different shades of aluminium. I think that alone would do, no need to buy a new servo saver.

I'm using the High Torque Servo Saver from Tamiya:

You could just use the XRay gears we have to some moter mount as the Zero. Thats if your layshaft will let you
