Default 540 can motor 4 slot vs. 2 slot

I know nothing about the 540 can motors that are run in many of the TCS races. I have a friend who is running in one in his Tamiya Mini (we have a pretty good class of them at our club races). Are there any differences in the motors with 4 holes in the can vs the 2 hole cans? If so which is more desirable? What tricks can be used on these motors, besides the obvious water dipping.

Thanks

Default Well the fastest 540's I've seen .....

were submerged and flushed clean (between each race) in CRC lectra clean motor cleaning fluid.
