How hot is too hot?

i have an hpi sprint with a 17 turn motor, 3300 mah battery pack, and a 122 tooth 64 pitch spur with a 31 tooth pinion. once i was done for the day, the motor was something like 145 degrees on my temp gun! is this alright? or will it harm the motor? i dont want to have to spend more money on another motor.:(

145*f is fine.

Kave 06-29-2004 01:06 PM

lol, steaming hot at 145, go race a sedan on carpet and if it dosent push 170 your not getting all you can out of it. Sometimes people run them up at 180+. Your fine.

how do you think i can get some more topspeed out of it though? i have a killer take-off and great run time, but no top-end!h:flaming:

Add teeth to the pinion.

macnkitty2002 06-29-2004 01:26 PM

but couldnt you just go to a lower spur gear to take away acceleration?

Sleighty 06-29-2004 03:12 PM

Yes its the same effect either way :)

macnkitty2002 06-29-2004 05:36 PM

what would happen if you lower the spur gear teeth and raise the pinion gear teeth at the same time?

FW-05RR 06-29-2004 05:50 PM

add a fan

macnkitty2002 06-29-2004 06:24 PM

what do you mean? could it overheat the motor and kill it?

Kave 06-29-2004 06:40 PM

dont worry about the spur, if you had to ask about the motor chances are your not experienced enogh to worry about a spur change, just change the pinion

macnkitty2002 06-30-2004 09:44 AM

thanks. I dont do much racing with it anyways. just mostly racing my buddies. I usually kick their tail though. :D they dont know whats under the body though.:sneaky:

ya thats fine. 175 is at the edge. I got my motor to 215 without burning it up. u could even smell the epocky melt. If u can keep your fingure on the motor for 5 seconds then its ok

A fan on touring does wonders, I don't like to run them over 130*.
But I can run a 10 turn, 4 cells, in 12th scale for 9 minutes and not get over 115*, but can't get a stock motor, 6 cells, in a 10th scale pan to go under 190*!!! Doesn't seem right. I'm thinking about trying a fan on the 10th scale pan.

how do you fit a fan on a car though? are there only a few chassis' that can use them? I have a HPI Sprint, not the best racing machine. The fan sounds interesting. tell me more.
