I'd say a combination of both...

Id say they have tons or torque, so your able to gear them a lot lower to get the top end out of them, without loosing the bottom end.

Purchased a new 17.5 D3 for racing at our up coming carpet race, and am not able to adjust the timing or did not want to damage it in getting it to move.

Any tricks or instructions????

Loosen the 3 long screws that come in from the pinion end. If those are to tight it will lock the timing ring down. If that dont work lightly tap the ring with a screw driver and it will free it up.

Thanks EA,

I had only done the 3 on the sensor side. Motor was teched for a BRL race with paint on the long screws, so did not give that a try.

What's the stock rotor that comes in the 17.5 & 13.5 motors; and is there a smaller one (what mm is it?) used in 1s applications?

the stock is a 12.3 broad powerband rotor.

there are a total of 6 rotors. they are rated at high rpm, hi torque, and broad powerband and then 2 sizes. 12.3 and 12.5

i tried the 12.3 high rpm rotor and did not really like it. more testing is needed. i spoke to EA at the snowbirds and he has done some testing with the rotors. not sure if he found a better combination. i think most of the stock 1/12 guys were running the stock rotor

someone posted a chart about a week or 2 ago

Been running a D3 21.5 in a VTA for ages without an issue. Finally switched my Rubber TC to the 17.5 D3 this weekend and detonated a rotor on its 2nd run. Anybody else have this kind of problem?

I had the same issue with mine and after trying what EA said still no luck. I took it apart to check it out and noticed the aluminim semi-circle slot the sensor board rotates in was very roughly cut and would not allow the feamle end of the sensor board to move freely. Just a little clean up with a hand file and smooth as butter.

i run on a tight/small track and use 42 timing, 10 turbo, 2 ramp, 3000-11000 rpm, throttle profile 5 and fdr 6.0 or 6.21 (one 64p tooth)
