I race my 417 on carpet with foam tyres. It goes very well. I added a separate post to stiffen up the car even more and the corner speed was improved.

I also ponder changing the suspension to the old 414 / original 415 style. The original 415 was brilliant with foams on carpet. I might try it one day.

Very nice. Is it the 417 or 417x?

I will be running rubber tires, 17.5 boosted... I am just stuck between the trf417 and 417x. I read the 417x has more flex, and is BRED for asphalt(the same issue I have with the TA06, but I feel the TRF will be MUCH more managable) and the trf417 is stffer and it could yield better results. Being as how Marc Rheinhardt prettymuch created both, I have been reading every document I could find. Ironically he is placing 2nd regularly on carpet and is "not satisfied" with its performance on carpet. Mainly due to him being a asphalt man.

I am by no means within a lightyear of his talent, and i would not be racing against people of that caliber. besides the "flex" he is experiencing on a 4.5t motor will not be experienced as much on a 17.5t boosted...

opinions?

Don't get it confused...Marc is a hired gun he does not design the cars. He is a driver and is very good at what he does. He does provide valuable input into the design team, but does not actually do any design work on the car.

If I were you I would buy a 417X without question. It is the newest car and with some work can really work well on any surface.

There is an alternative chassis (Hard type) available from Exotek to dial in the handling characteristics your seeking for carpet. It's certainly worth a look and hopefull will help with in your decision making process.

I was checking that out... However I dont know how I feel about removing cooling ports for a tad more stiffness.

It's the 417. The Car has more flex than i have seen on a car (even the 416 is rigid compared to it). It took a while to get the set-up sorted but now my car is really planted and I get fastest lap pretty much every week. At our club the racers after getting a trf have bought the 417 over the X.

I also do not use additive. I run 13.5 on a tight circuit.

If touring car racing gets more popular around here, I'll probably
get one of these cars. Until then I guess I'll run my TA05 ver2.
I bet one of these cars are a dream to drive in mod class.

i have had a 417x and now own a ta05r with the exotek conversion, I am faster with the ta05 then the 417x, I just could not set up the x well, but the ta05 is just amazing, I also have a ta06 pro, and again the ta05 is faster, must be the exotek chassis, and I can run the low profile bodies from tamiya best of bot worlds

Can someone explain the handling characteristics when adjusting the front and rear wheelbase independently? I’m aware of what overall wheelbase adjustments do for handling.

In order to answer this question you have to understand what sway bars actually do and how they might affect the handling of your car. What works for one person does not work for all. Check out this video...it is for real cars but applies directly!

When you move wheelbase at both ends of the car at the same time (assuming an equal amount) the weight distribution changes on the car. This is usually done to affect the tipping point or center of weight shift.

When you change one end of the car you are actually adjusting the wheel base by making the overall car either shorter or longer. This also affects the weight bias in the car and usually has a dramatic change in the overall feel of the car. The shorter the wheelbase the easier is the car to rotate through a corner and the longer the wheel based the more stable the car is which usually has less overall steering.

It is best to try and achieve as close to 50/50 front and rear and then adjust to your liking. People usually use scales to measure the weight distribution front to rear.

I personally do not do this...I usually drive the car and fine tune as I need to. This is not a setting I usually mess with once I get my car set the way that I like it.
