Arrow Something I Need to Share (LOVE)

Starting Grid Sgrid7 Item 41: Something I Need to Share
Entered by XXXX XXXXX on Wed May 28 21:22:24 EDT 2003:

This involves something that happened at a local track over a month
ago. I think this is something everyone should stop and read. Who was
involved in this incident is not important. The result of what
happened is very important.

I do most of my racing at one particular hobby shop. I also buy about
95% of my stuff from there. In April they had their last indoor trophy
race. The turnout wasn't the greatest, but enough people showed up to
make it interesting. One racer was a person I have known for years,
and is quite a bit better than I am. He happened to be TQ for this
race. The low turnout meant that there would not be seperate classes
for the novice and pro drivers, we would race together. The race
director did his best to seed the heats, but one or two less
experienced drivers were in the heat with the pro level drivers.

During the "pro" heat of the last round of qualifying, an incident
occurred. My friend, who was already TQ, was trying to improve his
time. He passed one of the slower drivers in the tight section of the
track. Going down the one long straight, the less experienced driver
tried to go under my friend at the entry of the turn at the end of the
straight. As you can imagine, he completely missed the brake zone, and
punted my friend to the outside wall. It wasn't particuarly hard, but
it did ruin a good run. Well, my friend took exception to it. He got
rather loud on the driver's stand, then began shouting right in the
face of the other driver. The other driver then got hot and began
shouting back. Then the shoving started, and the heat had to be
stopped. Things cooled off a little, then started getting hot in the
pits again. An actual fistfight never broke out, but the mood for the
day had been ruined. My friend ended up winning the race, but was
asked by the track owner not to come back for a while.

That's not the worst that happened. Today I was at that hobby shop
talking to the owner. We were talking over the first outdoor race that
was just held. My friends name came up in conversation. He explained
how upset he was at my friend, and how he was hurting the hobby in
general. It seems that one of the hobby shops newest and best
customers was also at that race. The new customer had brought cars for
himself and his 2 sons, and spent a lot (thousands) in the shop over
the winter. Since that race, that customer had not been in the store
until this week. After witnessing the incident, he decided that RC
racing WAS NOT a good hobby for him or his sons.

Now think about that for a second. The novice driver that punted my
friend was definitely in the wrong. My friend was defintiely wrong for
nearly geting into a fight over it. But who got hurt the most in all
of this? The hobby shop owner, who only wanted to provide a place for
his customers to race, but now loses one of his best customers because
of something he wasn't involved with.

All of us have lost our temper at one time or another at a race. I've
done it more times than I like to admit. We really need to keep things
in perspective, because we never know who else is watching. This is
supposed to be a hobby, which means we do it to have fun. There are
too many people out there who are taking this way too seriously, and
the entire hobby is suffering because of it. I hope, if you've made it
this far in the post, you keep this in mind the next time somethimg
gets you mad.

Default So right

Your so right,

I can understand that you would get mad if something actually broke... or if he didn't win, but apparently (according to the post) nothing of the sort happened. Why the yelling, people make mistakes. I don't think some guy would intentionally just hit someone...

The thing is when your good at something there will always be people who are just starting out... people who aren't the "almighty driver" you think you are... but these people will one day be your competition or your friends. What good is being the best when you have no one to race. Or what good is racing the same 10 guys for years. New blood means variety and new challenges.

There are a million ways to just shake this post off. Maybe your too cool, maybe your just the man (or woman)... maybe your ideaolgy just doesn't allow you to be nice... maybe your mom wasn't nice to you as you were growing up so now you take it out on the world... whatever. Just remeber you needed help to get to were you are, and I'm pretty sure they didn't yell at you while they were giving it.

There are a few wise old sayings that I believe are appropriate here.

When in doubt, TAKE EM OUT!!!

If you can't win, BE THE OUTCOME!!!

Sorry... had to go there.

Bad situation all around.

I think the newbie is a quitter and a wuss

If someone did that to me that'd just make me want to do better and stuff it in his face

Your friend is good and he backed it up...

I think maybe if wern't so anal and helped guys like the newb then the sport would be a lot better too

In any competitive sport or hobby, you'll find alot of emotion going into it. If someone ticks you off while your in such a nervous and intense state, your bound to really get mad. Look at any sport. Brawls and fights all the time.
The guy who decided that rc racing isn't for his sons.....etc, should considering gardening as their next hobby. No bad blood there

the simple fact is is.. when it stops being fun stop doing it... this yes may be considered a sport...but all in all it is toy cars we play with for fun....if u dont have fun in this hobby find another one that isnt as stressfull..

i have raced for 17 years.. and u can ask anyone i know.. i have never even raised my voice at another driver for what happens on the track. i have never had a fit and made myself look imature... i do this for stress relief..and people who know can say i qm easy going..

... new guys will and have taken me out.. its how it is.. your race director should have split up the class.. no matter if there was 3 guys in each class... when u run all together u take on the reprocutions of it.. that guy should have voiced his opionin...before the racing..

we have guys who hack themselfs out of races.. and after they break all they do is sit on the drivers stand and complain at the top of there lungs... it happens.. we are not sitting inside these cars... accident happen...

i got hosed out of a possible a main run, for sure b main at the 2003 carpet oval nats.... this one guy took me out three times... everytime i tried to pass him i got taken out.. and i was alot faster then him... after the race my caer was banged up and it sucked the next qualifyer...i ended up in the c main... but i qual 22 out of 55 guys.. so i made the top 50% i was fine with that... cause it was fun...

I know what you guys mean. There have been many times that a newb or lower level driver has taken me out, and I can admit that I do get frustrated, but I never let those feelings leave my mouth (or fists...).

Right on Burbs! We do this for fun, thats the bottom line. People who get all bent out of shape over a 50 cent trophy obviously have bigger issues to deal with. That father probably thinks all racers are like that, therefore he doesn't want his sons to be a part of racing and personally I dont blame him. R/C is a great family hobby its just unfortunate that he saw the exception rather than the rule.

"The novice driver that punted my friend was definitely in the wrong"

I hate to be the one to break it to you but you couldn't be more wrong. The fact he's a novice by definition means that he is apt to be involved in just this type of incident; it's the expected performance of a novice. So it should have come as no surprise whatsoever that it happened. Your friend should only rightfully be pi$$ed at the race director who mixed the novices in with the pro class. The novice didn't choose to race with the pros, he was forced to do it.

Your friend is an a$$hole plain and simple and frankly the hobby doesn't need him if that is his attitude.

There's a lot of people who give a lot of lip service about novices and needing them to grow the sport, blah, blah, blah, but the minute they have an incident with one of them the do the exact same thing as your friend and as you can see the result is a turn off to the other people wanting to get into the hobby.

Even if there is only one novice who has paid to race he should then be in a class by himself, NEVER mixed in with the more experienced drivers.

Think about it.
