When you say Losi pistons, are you referring to the offroad ones or the pistons found in the jrxs type R?
I'm asking because they are of different diameter

I have a big bag of mixed plastics from my TC5, is there any easy way to tell if it a hard or soft part by looking at it? Chris? anyone else?

Besides the hard parts being stiffer (most noticable with caster blocks). They sound different when you drop them on your table, and if you put a scratch on it or twist a small pin hole into it with your exacto knife, the material feels different... the soft plastic is more "buttery" and the hard is more "carboney", if that makes any sense. The difference is also noticable when you twist droop screws into the arms for the first time.

most of the hard part have shiny finish to it ! but be carefull not all of them ! the best bet is to go with a knife and feel them as mentionned !
if you guys want to use losi pistons you need to off road ones ! you can also achieve the same by using black piston and drill them to either 56-57 or whateved size you want or 1,1,1.5 like we have been running.
As for the gear diff, the best one right now is the yokomo diff made by yokomo. It is the smoothest.

Why the gear diff over the ball diff? and is this advantage in all classes or only the modified? (ie are you running gear in the Expert 17.5 classes too)
Second, based off your halloween classic setup what changes would you first make if you took that car to a carpet track that was "green" and only saw action every other week so there is never much of a groove, so you would be looking for more overall grip especially in the rear.

The first thing I would do is reduce front camber and add more rear camber. Most of the time on high traction I like running a little more front camber than rear because the car picks up a push as the traction gets higher.
The other thing is you will want about half to 1 mm more droop all around to let the car roll more ! other than that, I wouldnt change anything.
As for the gear diff, in 17.5 the difference is very minimal and I would say it wont make much of a difference. At the indoor champs I ran both and went just as fast with both in 17.5. The main reason to run it mod is because it stays consistent and you never need to rebuild it plus it give just a little more rotation which in some case can be good or bad.

on some of the setup sheets silver ball used these are not in kit whats the difference ?

Yes it the ball height ! the Silver is 0.030 taller
