I'm looking at creating a 1/8 elec gt class at our track. I believe a spec esc and motor combo is a good idea, as it prevents an arms race during the startup. On the other hand it may keep people who already have esc and motor away...

But let's assume we'll go for spec.

What would your thoughts be for a 4s spec esc and motor (any combo)?

I've looked around for some common rules for this class but have not seen any for electric? What are most tracks doing?

I'm thinking of going with a RX8 & 1700KV on 6 cells? Was thinking this set up would be fairly efficient and help keep the heat down while still providing the same speeds as the larger motors on 4cells?

I used to run 5S with 1700kv and I ended up switching to 4s and 2200 KV. We have all settled on 4s, either 2200 KV or 2650 KV.

6S and 1700 KV will be too much for an onroad car.

Doesn't this push your batteries a lot more? What kind of differences did you see going to a higher KV and lower cell count?

In your experience, is there a lot of difference between the different mfg? Running similar kv setups, is there a lot of speed difference?

@ Dave: Depends to the C rating of your battery and gearing. 40C and up can handle the higher KV. 4S also gives you more battery options, especially in hard case.

@Julius: I've only ran a Tekin, so I can't offer opinion on other motors.

Ok. Without trying to turn this in 'the best motor thread' if you compare your car to others around you. Is there a big difference in power?

I'm trying to find out if a spec motor esc combo is a good idea when starting out a gt class in our club.

Well, as far as I could tell, all of us were running Tekins. Most popular was the 2650.

I think the Tekin is the best bet, it gives you the option to start out sensored.. And for onroad it's important.. So in my option it is the best option for this class

Xerun 150A and xerun 4168 - 2250kv it's a good choice using 4S

From racing a stock class of electric boats I can tell you there is a difference. Some companies will have more torq vs speed then others so it would depend on which the track/driver preferred. A lot depends on the rotor and way the stator (sp?) is wound. Then you get into the issue of is it a sealed motor or not? I'm not sure you can ever lock down the cheaters but going with a max kv & cell count is a reasonable start. I think ESC's opens up another question. In our boat classes we left it open and limited to 3 different closed motors.

I'm running a 1550kv on 6s for bashing and it's held up so great so far. I haven't read temps over 150F yet. Low kv and higher voltage is so much more efficient than the other way around.

I think you're asking for trouble by making it a spec electronics class. Leave it fairly open and you should see a better turnout. 8th scale offroad does fine without major restrictions (especially the tracks that allow 6s) so I think that's your best bet. If you decide to allow any motor and limit Kv know that it won't always work because those numbers are close but really not that accurate or comparable between all brands. Also, if you do have a spec motor and ESC then you now have a battery race, that's no fun. My opinion of course
