I'm looking at creating a 1/8 elec gt class at our track. I believe a spec esc and motor combo is a good idea, as it prevents an arms race during the startup. On the other hand it may keep people who already have esc and motor away...
But let's assume we'll go for spec.
What would your thoughts be for a 4s spec esc and motor (any combo)?

I've looked around for some common rules for this class but have not seen any for electric? What are most tracks doing?
I'm thinking of going with a RX8 & 1700KV on 6 cells? Was thinking this set up would be fairly efficient and help keep the heat down while still providing the same speeds as the larger motors on 4cells?

In your experience, is there a lot of difference between the different mfg? Running similar kv setups, is there a lot of speed difference?

From racing a stock class of electric boats I can tell you there is a difference. Some companies will have more torq vs speed then others so it would depend on which the track/driver preferred. A lot depends on the rotor and way the stator (sp?) is wound. Then you get into the issue of is it a sealed motor or not? I'm not sure you can ever lock down the cheaters but going with a max kv & cell count is a reasonable start. I think ESC's opens up another question. In our boat classes we left it open and limited to 3 different closed motors.

I think you're asking for trouble by making it a spec electronics class. Leave it fairly open and you should see a better turnout. 8th scale offroad does fine without major restrictions (especially the tracks that allow 6s) so I think that's your best bet. If you decide to allow any motor and limit Kv know that it won't always work because those numbers are close but really not that accurate or comparable between all brands. Also, if you do have a spec motor and ESC then you now have a battery race, that's no fun. My opinion of course
